If standards were taught from a "personal convictions" standpoint and never associated with one's eternal salvation, it wouldn't be legalistic.
Unfortunately, it has been my experience that standards are never taught in a manner that is aside from salvation.
It would be legalistic to suggest that a Christian must maintain their salvation by participating in all night prayer meetings on a weekly basis. It would not be sensible to suggest that participating in an all night prayer meeting would be a waste of time.
