I think we do war stupidly. Bush went in with best of intents, with the support of the UN and almost 100% of Congress. Then as usual the leftists use the war as a political weapon, which I consider treason. They undermined the power of the US to solve the problems, and in the process we give the Iraqis the power to make decisions that they should not have had.
So, the answer is not simple. We should not have been in the position of the Iraqis having the decision making power.
More directly, if we are not going to support a full and unqualified victory, then don't go to war.
War is hell, and not a spectator sport. As a very successful general once said, you go in and hit them with everything you've got. More die initially, but then you have a basis to rebuild with control and order. And the enemy is not given the power to do anything but what they are told.
We now lack the courage to do war the right way, and only when we have to do so. If you go, go do the job, take the spoils, pay for the war, and then set up a government with people that will do what is right for the citizens of the nation, so that they have an opportunity for a new start.
The US hasn't won a war since WWII, Korea is a disaster, Vietnam was lost, now the Middle is turning into another disaster.
