Some did fill his head full of tripe.
They made him believe he was the sharpest knife in the drawer, the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree, and the hardest little rock that ever was quarried.
They destroyed his foundations, convincing him that baptism in Jesus Name wasn't essential, that the Holy Ghost baptism wasn't essential, and that what you thought about the godhead din't really matter either.
They jackhammered everything solid he had ever been taught out of his mind and spirit and left him with a void of disillusionment and questions.
You are right, Ron.
Some so-called Christians did let him down.
They took a young man with a bright mind and a lot of potential, and turned him into a complete and total spiritual wreck.

I like the whole, "We tried our best, now let's wash our hands of him" stuff now that he doesn't wish to go to church. At least that is the impression I get from a couple of posts... he did spend time in prison, right? How is that not taking responsibility?
He's a really smart guy who made a mistake... period.
Nathan, if you read this send me an e-mail, I'd like to chat... but not about religion.

If I may say here......
Nathan asked me for the addy of the latest forum website but I never gave it to him. I think it would be very unwise for Nate to get involved with a forum at this time.
Word to the wise......

I prayed for him but Nathan is and was the source of his own problem. I doubt very seriously that let him down. I imagined you did your best to be his friend. So don't beat yourself up over it. He is an adult.

Sadly I am afraid you are correct. On he one hand he has absolutely no one to blame but himself for his own actions and the consequences of those actions.
On the other hand I am afraid I am one of those people who let him down after saying I would keep in touch through it all. When my son was sent to Iraq I got preoccupied with that and after a few attempts did not keep in touch with Nathan.

CS,
I agree with your first sentance then we part company. I don't think the criminal activity he engaged in had anything to do with whether or not he believed Acts 2:38 was the three step plan of salvation.
The idea that if only he had been left sheltered in a conservative UPC church he would have never considered robbing a bank or the other illegal activity is absurd.
I know plenty of PCI folks who don't rob banks.

But... seeing how some of us that call ourselves christians have let him down (myself included) or filled his head full of tripe in certain areas, I can't really say I blame the guy for feeling that way.
