I don't like the woods. Too many little "creatures" are there thinking that that part of the woods belongs to them and not me and I am the enemy. Soooo, I let them have it to themselves!!!
We lived for a few years on a country lane where there were few houses. The road was basically a dead end and ended at a lodge/camp type of affair. There were no street lights past our house.
I used to walk down that road a LOT. It was beautiful - especially in the winter after a fresh snowfall. I used to walk it occasionally at night with only moon and stars lighting the way. I loved the quietness, hearing the crunch of snow under my boots and the air so crisp and clean. And in the winter you didn't have to worry much about meeting anything remotely dangerous.
I certainly wouldn't do that here I can tell you. It wouldn't be animals I'd be worried about either -- but people!

Ticks are the best. I picked several off LR today and she called a little bit ago and found two more. I told her she ain't sleeping with me in the cabin with her little friends!!
I, on the other hand, wearing capris instead of a skirt (which is a tick picker upper in the woods), had NOT ONE tick on me!!!

Not me!!!! Now my oldest son is not afraid to walk home a mile in the DARK through the WOODS from coonhunting with his dad. UH-UH, no way, not me. I'm too chicken.
I was scared REALLY bad when I was a little girl, around 5 years old, by these girls that lived down the road from one of our friends. The girl was hispanic and DID NOT like "whities" as she called us. She was cussing me out and I told her if she didn't quit, I was going to tell on her, as a 5 year would. Well, she didn't stop so I stepped outside the door and all the adults were talking and I was taught that you DO NOT interrupt adults ever, unless it was an emergency, so I didn't. I stayed out for a while and then went back in. Later they asked me to with Rhonda to "walk her home." So, like a dummy, I did. When we got there I stayed outside waiting on Rhonda to show up and she and this girl and her 4 sisters came out and 2 held Rhonda and 2 took me to the woods behind her house and absolutely tormented me with all kinds of things. The one thing I remember so vividly was they got a paint glove that was really "hairy" and they had me blindfolded so I couldn't see anything, and it was really dark anyway, and they told me that it was wild animal and rubbed it all over my face and arms and legs. I was screaming bloody murder and my mom and Rhonda's mom were coming to check on us, because we were gone so long, and they heard my screams. They started yelling and the girls heard them and DRUG me back to the house, ripped off the blindfold, and threw me down on the cement and threatened me that if I told they'd come and get my little sister and do unspeakable things to her. Well, my mom and Jerry heard them threaten me and my mother came unlgued at the seams, oh my word, it was bad. Well, the girls mom heard all the commotion and came outside. Wrong thing to do. My mom snatched her off the porch and started whuppin up on her for allowing her girls to do what they did to me. They finally pulled my mom off of her and we went home.
My Daddy and Rhonda's daddy started up there, and I started screaming and crying and begging them not to because they would hurt Dedra, my sister, and they finally decided not to because I was sooooo upset.
I couldn't sleep by myself for WEEKS.
It was awful. At times, that feeling of fear still comes over me at night, if I can't see the light. Yucky!!!

Oh my goodness! That would have been terrifying for sure! I can't even imagine! I can well understand your fear then.
Those kids were horrible and what's even worse is that they grow up to be nasty adults and that kind of behavior often still continues and it's passed on from generation to generation.
No wonder you're still haunted by it occasionally. I can understand why.

I went hunting with the Skinner ONE time and VOWED to NEVER go again. We had to cross 3 barbed wired fences, walk up a really high "holler", almost got sprayed by a FAMILY of SKUNKS, mo joke. A Moma and her babies, didn't stay to count how many babies she had, though,. I had scratches on my....well, we won't go there, but it was bad and by the time we got back to the truck, the dog we had was sitting in the truck, behind the steering wheel, and evidentally he ran into the family of skunks, at least he smelled like he had been sprayed by ALL of them. It was halarious!!!! I was so mad at John for getting us "lost" and then we see that stupid dog sitting behind the wheel in Donnies truck.
Needless to say, I rode home in the back of the pickup. The dog got left so the smell could wear off for a while.

What a horrible story! Things that happen to us when we are children affect us later in life. And there is nothing you can do about it.
I hope those girls got what they deserved eventually.

LadyRev and I went to her woods tonight. We saw a deer and a turkey that was in flight. We saw several turkeys along the way and another deer across from her property.
I can't wait til November!
LR is going turkey hunting this weekend. My kids and I are staying at the cabin with her and play games by propane light. It's gonna be cool.
Have mercy!!! I've been hunting nigh onto 30 years and spent many a day and many a night in the woods and have seen some downright incredible things. But to this day I have never seen a flying deer.

"My Adventures With the Skinner"
