Excuse me, but are all of you telling me that you missed this? This has been the issue all along. And as much as we don't want to discuss it - people, largely, do not trust this man.
Easy to miss, since it wasn't even mentioned in the news article I read. I don't exactly spend my days watching Fox.
Regardless, since the assignment was changed, (and I'm sure it's optional for schools), I don't think it's that big of a deal. The speech looks pretty generic.

Abi,
You also missed the larger point - the assignment was CHANGED after the outcry. It's doesn't matter that the speech looks pretty generic. It's the original intent that is the big deal.
Your previous comment is very telling of an apathetic people -
Quote:
"I'll just say this--if people are going to send their kids to government schools, they shouldn't get their panties in a wad when the government plays a major role, to put it mildly."
It reminds me of a comment that Dear Abby wrote when the homeschool industry was on the rise and the school feared a mass exodus. She said, "The public schools don't need to worry about closing their doors. If they tried to do that parents would be on the front steps beating on the doors saying, 'Take my children, please!"
When Dan Morales served as Texas Attorney General he said this, "When parents drop their children off on the steps of the public schools, they no longer belong to the parent, but the state."
My mother called his office with no reply from him and ended up having a piece published in the editorial section of the San Antonio Light newspaper on the subject. Kudos to my mother!!! Someone was not asleep.
And if anyone doesn't remember or know - BOTH - Obama and David Axelrod had mothers who wrote for Communist publications. Hello!!!! lol
Unfortunately for Ford, the General Accounting Office concluded that the Bush administration had not acted improperly. "The speech itself and the use of the department's funds to support it, including the cost of the production contract, appear to be legal," the GAO wrote in a letter to Chairman Ford. "The speech also does not appear to have violated the restrictions on the use of appropriations for publicity and propaganda."
I would like to point out, again, that Bush DID NOT have Lesson Plans to be worked by the students, which were later CHANGED from the original wording because of public outcry. He did not have them at all. Bush also DID NOT have to construct a 2nd draft because of public outcry. INTENT is the issue with the Obama speech.
I do agree that both parties have, in many ways, been culpable in pushing our country into socialism. Obama is pushing us further and faster. The American people have had enough. At least we still have the freedom to speak up for our rights and to change parties when we become dissatisfied.

No offense, Pressing On, but we will never agree on this, so to continue is pointless. I will leave it by saying, IMHO, it is much ado about nothing.
I agree. I read the content of the speech and didn't find anythiong objectional and no agenda but the good advice to stay in school and try your best regardless of external circumstances. So he tells the kids that they are ultimately responsible for what they become and where they go in life.
That is true. So Barry says it, and we all know that I am no fan of Barry. But if if he, as president wants to advise kids to make their best effort at an education, why scream against it?
I have tried, not always successfully not to be an arbitrary barry basher just because I think he is a commie. He does enough wrong to keep me bashing away anyhow.
A "stay in school" speech isn't bashworthy. Now if he was pushing socialism..... now that would be bashworthy.

Reason: spelling
It was an interesting article. This info at the bottom of the page on their forum was as well...
George H.W. Bush: Encouraged "America's students to strive for excellence." While president, George H.W. Bush gave a speech to schoolchildren intended "to motivate America's students to strive for excellence; to increase students' as well as parents' responsibility/accountability; and to promote students' and parents' awareness of the educational challenge we face."
According to The Washington Post, the "White House sent letters to schools across the nation to encourage teachers and principals to allow students to tune in the speech, which was also carried live by the Mutual Broadcasting and NBC Radio Network. The live television and radio coverage was arranged at the request of the Education Department." [Washington Post, 10/2/91]
George W. Bush: Learning materials from White House, former President George W. Bush posted a "teacher's guide" on the White House website (http://georgewbush-whitehouse.archive...) intended to help students understand the "freedom timeline" and encouraged them to "explor[e] the biographies of the President, Mrs. Bush, Vice President, and Mrs. Cheney."
Another quote from GHWB's speech...
"Write me a letter -- and I'm serious about this one -- write me a letter about ways you can help us achieve our goals."
I see no difference, OTHER than this is Obama...!!
