LOL, they just kept telling me that the book was wrong. They really thought they knew better from watching the Veggie Tales. Finally I got my sister, that they spend more time with, to tell them that the book was really true.
Again, I am not against the Veggie guys, I just have an opinion that differs from others. It doesn't bother me to be different. I would have more appreciation for them if they just left Bible characters out of the story line, unless they are going to tell the truth about what happened to those characters.
Hey, I can sure identify with that!

I was horrified when I watched them the first time. I had heard their music and it was cute, but if children watched them without having someone tell them the truth, they will have a very distorted view of God.
Horrified? I would be horrified if my kids were watching South Park. LOL!!! Are you sure you should be horrified?
My children have watched Veggie Tales since they were little (the two oldest have really outgrown them), and I can assure you they do not have a distorted view of God, and IF they ever encounter an inconsistency, they are pragmatically corrected. But I usually don't bother, since they really do comprehend the difference between a dramatized version of a story, and the actual account.
It is absolutely no different than putting on a play about the birth of Christ and including dialogue between Joseph and Mary that isn't recorded in scripture, but simply in the mind of the author. Or what the shepherds might have said to one another after they saw the angels.

It has been a looooong time now, but I remember Jonah and the whale. The only thing similarity to the real Bible story was that there was a character named Jonah, he ended up in a fish and there was a town called Nineveh. That is what concerns me.
I personally wish they would just make cute cartoons about moral kid things and not try to tell "Bible stories" that have nothing to do with the Bible. Little kids get in their mind, after watching the same DVD a hundred times, that they learned a Bible story. If they don't go to church or go to a church that doesn't teach the Bible, but just preaches, they will have lies in their heads instead of truth.
It took me over a week to get one child to believe me over the DVD that the story of Esther that they saw was not in the Bible. Sad. Again, it could have been a cute story, if they had not implied it was in the Bible.
Why try to convince her that it wasn't in the Bible? Why not just read her the Bible story, with your own inflections, in an enjoyable story-telling way? My father used to tell me Bible stories all the time--with his own embellishments. There was nothing sad about it. I still have some of the 30 year old cassette tapes. What a treasure! When I got older and could read for myself, maturity took over and I was able to differentiate the "real" parts from the make-believe *fun* parts.

So, I guess I would say that I won't show these to any kids I keep. They imply that they are telling a Bible story and what they show is not even close to the truth.
Just my opinion I can see from what I have read here.
The Veggie Tales Jonah movie very effectively teaches the main point of the story--that people who repent of their sins will be forgiven and have a second chance. I'm quite happy for my children to learn such lessons.

I would not be horrified now, but I was back then. It seems from the way people are reacting to my opinion, that I am stepping on toes. I really had not intent on making my silly opinion such a big deal.
I am truly sorry if I have offended people here. I will leave it be now. I see how you guys have an appreciation for them, I simply do not. I don't think they are evil, I just think there are better things to be done with their time. Sorry.

I don't think you're offending anyone. Your opinion just seems a little extreme, in reference to Veggie Tales. If I could come up with some of the most wholesome shows out there for children, VT would be at the top of my list.
Further, it's the principle of it. Our church does dramatic productions from time to time, and we don't present the plays/skits verbatim as the Word presents the stories. People act out parts that aren't specifically spelled out in scripture, but everyone gets the overall point. I really don't see the harm in it. And in the case of the children you were talking about--if they don't come from a Christian home, then I would hesitate to criticize a positive influence that might make them more interested in God or His Word.
I'm not sure how you actually handled it, but if it ever comes up again, perhaps you could use it as a teaching opportunity. Kids need to know that there are a ZILLION different versions of history and Bible stories, but there's one main source. Refer them to the original story, and let them see if they can find the differences, or see if you can make the original story more interesting, adventurous and exciting than the *ahem* expanded version.
As far as your opinions being a big deal--whatever you post on the AFF, you should be prepared to have it challenged, and defend your views. That's just a way of life here.

I LOVE VEGGIE TALES and I'm 52 years old! I love the song videos that came out several years ago. My kids are so old now I don't even know what Veggie Tales are out now, but I have the old videos!
I love the Adventures in Odyssey series! Veggie Tales are stupid, but not a threat to the family.
No, they're not!!!! They're actually witty. You have to pay attention to the dialogue.
But then, I love Wallace and Gromit, too, so I'm not sure what that says about my sophisticated taste.

I also remember listening to "Family Radio" when I was a kid-- staying up late to hear all the, "Unshackled" stories.
In fact, I rank my memories of listening to "Unshackled" as a kid higher than my memories of watching, "Alfred Hitchcock Presents."
I loved those! I grew up listening to Adventures in Odyssey, Unshackled, and a few other Saturday morning kids' shows. (Can't remember the names....) I also remember listening to Mystery Theater with my Dad!

If I could find a station playing Adventures in Odyssey here in Orlando, I'd listen to it every day!!!
Unshackled was more thrilling than the Twilight Zone for me.
It was the music, along with the narrator's voice-- I was always on the edge of my seat for Unshackled!
I can still hear that organ....
