Thanks ILG, I think I'll stick with furry creatures and fruits and veggies. Who am I kidding? Maybe I'd be a vegan... I couldn't even kill a gardner snake that was on my driveway last fall! Put him in a bucket and carried him to the woods...
I also keep a garden, complete with basic herbs, and several herbal health books that explain natural remedies, give plant descriptions, and make alternative suggestions for supplies we normally use. ie spider webs stuck on a wound can help stop bleeding. Mint is good for stomach aches (and it works pretty well for tension headaches and bug repellant for me). Mulberries are a natural laxative, and dandelions are a natural diuretic. Sage for sleeping. Lambs ear is good for something... I'd just have to get out a candle and look that up.
I don't get sick that much, and have no real medical problems, so that makes a difference.
I'm experimenting with not turning the lights (thats the only daily electric in my house in the summer except cell phone chargers) on at night for the summer. Don't know how it will work, but I stay up too late with the lights on and live by myself so there isn't anyone to complain. With daylight lasting til 9:00 and past, I figure if dark is inconvenient maybe I should be doing something else (ie sleep, Mary, sleep! That's what night is for!!!) I tried it last night. I still stayed up til 11:30, but I woke up much more easily this morning and haven't been tired yet today like I normally am. So we'll see.
I'd love to be able to turn the power off in the summer. Last bill: appx $25. appx $7 for electric usage, the rest in taxes and fees.

Seriously, I would explore Solar Panels & not just any Solar Panels.
Some are more effecient than the others, I would look at what Bro Hoover mentioned a shack in your back yard that runs on wood & can heat your water & house.
Wind power is okay too.
Do you have access to plentiful supply of firewood?
Do Hurricanes, or Tornadoes frequent your area?
All these things need to be considered before you decide.
Also, a lot of these need an initial outlay of large amounts of money that is paid off as time goes on, so it is a long term commitment before you see a ROI!

I would be writing to my Senator (or at least Obama or Oprah) if I were you. This is pure highway robbery!
LOL
And while your writing, can you do something about our $289 July and $275 August bills? LOL
Oh yeah, air conditioning. This experiment, living with no electricity, will have to wait till October, or so.
BTW, our new house, built in 2006, is twice as big as our old one (built in the 70s), but our summer electric bill is actually less now. Better insulation and more efficient a/c units make a huge difference.

Oh yeah, the theater. The experiment is on hold, indefinitely! (Just outfitting it now, finally! Projector, screen, the whole bit. Wasn't as expensive as I thought it would be. But man, what a DIY nightmare! May tell about it some day, when I can look back at it and laugh. )

I would love to "go green" and have solar power but I priced a system for my house and it would be 75,000 to totally power my 1649sq ft house with solar panels..which the goverment would take care of 1/2 of the bill but still thats 37,500 out of my pocket so I want be going green anytime soon and I would be lost if I had not electricity could not get on AFF...LOL
