Yeah, "new" just because it's "new" won't cut it; the same as "old" just because someone said it was "old" hasn't cut it either.

We need a clear and consistent vision based upon Biblical values. Coupled with that, we need to be a bit more open to the inevitable differences that will always exist among us.

We must, however (IMHO of course) rid ourselves of this habit of always wanting to be the first to condemn anything that is new or a bit different. The articles and letters that Shaw's article at least appears to be addressing are a good example - or bad example of this behavior.

Just because some "kid" preached at GC we were all subjected to the rant of his neighbor who was eager to tar the "kid" with everything "emergent." Did the guy even try and visit with the "kid" and share a lunch or a cup of coffee before publishing his anger and resentment for the whole world to read?

You're a wise man Stewie. But best of all - you're also an optimistic man. That's the kind of combo we need to have super-sized.

Re: Let's Talk about This. Seriously!

Younger trusting the older and vice versa.

i read on a conservative forum recently a young minister asking that the older ministers would sit down and talk with the younger. To share with them the inportance of this apostolic heritage.

This younger minister was then chastised by an older minister who told him that:
"this younger bunch would not have so many questions they'd just get on their face and pray.

He then said , they want the easy way. that they are not willing to pay the price of prayerfully seeking out what the word says.

This Elder then told the younger that he could care less what anybody thinks of him, as long as he knows he got his doctrine fron God in prayer."

I enjoyed this article... I think too many people push off the emergent style as not "Godly" enough for church...

This elder sounds arrogant. I cannot envision Paul speaking to Timothy in this way.

I think he is well respected amongst hs UC brothers, but I also thought he came off in his answer to this young minister as quite proud/ arogant.

I'm surprised the elder did not want to discuss the importance of his Apostolic heritage with the younger minister. Isn't that what elders do, teach the younger?

That would be interesting information if it is available.
It would be interesting to see a breakdown by age of ministers in the UPC, ALJC, PAW and also in other groups such as Calvary Chapel, Association of Vineyard Churches, Assemblies of God, Church of God in Christ, and also compared to mainline denominations such as United Methodist, Southern Baptist, etc.

I have read articles about the lack of young men going into the priesthood in the Roman Catholic Church. Some churches are being closed; some are being consolidated with others; and lay members (including women in some cases) are taking over pastoral duties in local churches. I don't know of any specific article on this but I have heard some of these things over the past few years.

Re: Let's Talk about This. Seriously!

For a lot of elders, they don't have the answers to the questions that we ask. And that is worrisome when you have been doing this your whole life. AND to this older generation, asking questions was sometimes seen as rebellious. So now you have this younger generation asking questions... and the conclusion is made that it is just rebellion.

But wait a minute!! Hey! Baby boomer generation that is retiring now, and stepping back. My generation has inherited global warming, a horrible deficit, and now a pension that is flat broke.... and you want us to trust you??
To just assume that what you say goes? That if we go along with the status quo, we will be all right?

Oh, but that doesn't happen among the church. Uh huh, yea right! What about..... and I could go on, and on with examples of major concern that were mishandled.

Point being, my generation.... 25 to 45 is inheriting some serious problems, both among the church and world. So we have every right to question... and even more so as we see the problems that certain stances or approvals have started. Problems that we now inherit.

We are walking new paths, blazing new trails... I'm sorry, I just can't walk in your Apostolic Footprints, I have to go make my own! But believe me, Mr. and Mrs. Older Generation, I do want you involved and I need your help, even if you don't have all the answers. Just get involved in our lives.... because sitting at the "reserved tables" doesn't work for me.
