Re: Important New Book on Oneness Pentecostalism
Just ordered it on Amazon. I'm sure there will be good things in it and I'm sure there will be things I disagree with. My philosophy has always been, "eat the meat and throw away the bones!"

Fudge's book was scholarly and made every reasonable attempt to be unbaised.
But I am not sure why ANYONE would attempt to get their theology from anything other than the Bible.

I agree. I enjoyed Fudge's book and probably would not have read it if it was completely biased because I was still very much in love with the oneness movement at the time that I read it.

OK, MOW, you've been volunteered to read the book and report on it to us.

Re: Important New Book on Oneness Pentecostalism
Bernard, Pugh and the Urshan School of Theology left so much out in their revisionist history of the upci, I can see why there is a need for outsiders to give the Bill O'Reily treatment to the subject.

Re: Important New Book on Oneness Pentecostalism
In my communications with Boyd, he has expressed recognition that not all oneness believers are legalists. At the time his book was written, the upci was the dominant force of the oneness message. I believe if Boyd's book was written today, it may have a different tone.
I'm currently reading a book Boyd wrote about prayer. An interesting read. Could incorporate some of his suggestions into my prayer life.

Re: Important New Book on Oneness Pentecostalism
From David Reed:
I'm afraid that the british are pretty lousy at marketing. It has taken them a long time to promote the book. I don't think they have yet contacted journals for advertising (but I could be wrong).
I don't expect a high rate of sales immediately, given the acdemic nature of the book. A Professor at the Church of God Seminary in Cleveland told me he will likely use it as a textbook. I am waiting to see how the upc at Urshan School of Theology treat it.
I just attended a canadian oneness conference (mostly afr-american leaders from the toronto area)--they advertised my book every night, and i sold a few, but not as many as I had hoped. but they were very positive about the book, especially the more academically inclined.
I look forward to your response to the book. a catholic prof here at the jesuit school is using the book for his students in his course on mystical spirituality...he likes Part One which describes heart religion in Pietism.
yes, the book is a revision of my doctoral thesis back in the 1970`s. however, it is really a revision and much better written--100 more pages, whole sections rewritten, change in my interpretation of the original architects of the doctrine. so i hope no one will think they know what i say based only on the old thesis.
am i qualified to write on this topic? my background is that i was reared in the upc in the Canadian Maritimes. three older brothers were oneness ministers. i was teaching math at a community college, then went to the u.s. to study theology, eventually getting my Ph.D. in systematic theology at Boston University. besides 18 years in pastoral ministry, i have been teaching at wycliffe college, university of toronto, for 21 years. unlike fudge who comes across in places a little polemical, my work is a more objective historical and theological treatment of the oneness pentecostal movement. in part 3 (theological) there are places in the conclusion of each chapter where i raise exegetical or theological questions. but it is overall pretty mild. and most of the criticisms do not require the oneness to give up their main doctrines, only make better arguments. i do have difficulty with the exclusiveness of many of the groups. but the prejudice is alive and well on both sides, yes? oneness authors are popular writers. whether your friends agree with me or not, at least this work is a scholarly work.
did i tell you that the book has already been nominated for an award by the Foundation for Pentecostal Scholarship. this group cooperates with the Society for Pentecostal Studies and grants an award at each annual meeting. I will know in january if the book makes the cut.
i am attaching three items--an announcement of the release of the book with a brief introduction (like a flyer), the Preface of the book, and chapter one (Introduction) which summarizes my approach to the book. the last two should not be circulated publicly as they are part of the book. but if you can trust your friends, it is ik to share this with them. maybe they will even want to go out and buy their own copy.
the first thing to be said about it is that it is the one and only scholarly introduction to the history and beliefs of oneness pentecostals. popular and non-scholarly writings exist but are not academic. and fudge's book treats only the upc's two views of
