Re: A question for everyone...Should a Minister?
What was the purpose? It didn't fit into the sermon at all. If this is a lady in his church for real, then that's just terrible. If it's not a lady in his church and the story was just embellished then that's just as wrong.

To give an example: "There's this lady at my church, she's a great saint, but this lady looks like a linebacker, has a moustache & everything. You know and she's single for obvious reasons. She's ugly but kind." The minister continues to puff out his cheeks, and try to give you a visual of what the person must look like.
How about if he got so carried away with the story he was telling that he slipped up and said the person's first name? Then quickly realized the mistake, asking for the one taping the service to edit the message to remove the name.

This would not surprise me at all with some of the people I have known. Not at all. Hopefully, most preachers would not do this type of thing.

It's terrible either way and especially over the pulpit.

Most ministers I've heard use an icebreaker when they begin a sermon. Others even throw in a joke or two during the sermon if it helps along in the sermon. He could have told this story about his trip down the slide without all the comments about the lady in his church. He didn't have to use her name. He realized the mistake, because he said "oops, I said her name..edit that out brother, or cover it up or something, I can't think of anything that rhymes with carolyn." Referring to himself as looking like a flying hippo didn't bother me, because he was making fun of himself and how he must have looked. However, he crossed the line with all the comments about the church member. That was totally uncalled for. If a visiting minister had gotten up in my church and started off before a sermon with something like that, the pastor would have sat him down. Without a doubt, he'd not be getting any future invitations to preach either.

Re: A question for everyone...Should a Minister?
This thread seems like a veiled attack against a poster/minister.
The greased slide story was related on either this forum or an earlier forum.

There is a context where insulting a saint is acceptable?

I thought better of including the link as it identifies the poster/preacher.
You can decide whether or not you want to leave it in your quote.

I would think that there could be much better use of God's time than to go on like that... But I am retracting everything else I said because *stephanas* made a good point that this thread could have been started with an agenda to come against another man...I for one don't want to jump on the band wagon... To me, that is just as bad.... Hmm! I think I will go find another thread to read... Let me find Mrs.LPW... She seems to find all the action! LOL

No, there isn't any context where the behaviour that forms the theme of this thread is acceptable.
The reality is that listening to the sermon online will make that whole thing more and not less distasteful. To listen to the sermon is to think less of the preacher/poster (Who may have just been having a little brain lag), and that is why I deleted the link to the sermon. I'm very willing to cut the preacher/poster a little slack on what may have been a mistake and not a pattern of behaviour.
I think that the thread starter has an agenda and I'm not interested in contributing to the condemnation of a well respected man. Thank you for deleting your quote of the link.

Re: A question for everyone...Should a Minister?
While the story was quite funny if it is in fact true then it was a terribly immature and ill advised one to share in a public meeting that was being taped.
It is the kind of story one might tell in private among family or other ministers. I can't fathom a pastor intentionally talking about a saint of his in such a derogatory manner.
I hope there is more to the story that what was on that tape.
