DeQuincy Man Gunned Down in Baton Rouge
By all accounts 39-year-old Brent Cole was a talented musician, splitting his weekends as bass player at his church in DeQuincy and a church in Baton Rouge.
"He was there for this particular weekend and happened to go down the wrong road," said Reverend David Hennigan.
Baton Rouge Police say Brent was on the phone with his wife Saturday night trying to get better directions to his hotel after getting lost. That's when someone started shooting at his car. The gunman eventually caught up with him, firing several shots into his vehicle killing him.
"Words just describe what we felt," said Hennigan.
Hennigan pastored Brent since he was thirteen and watched him grow up at the Pentecostal Church of DeQuincy. He's says Brent's death is like losing one of his own.
"They've taken away one of the favorite sons of this town and of course one of the favorite sons of this church," said Rev. Hennigan.
A loving husband and father of two young boys, Brent managed one of the supermarkets in DeQuincy for the past 18-years, always greeting customers with a friendly smile.
"His nickname in DeQuincy among all of his peers was 'Smiley.' And then he also has another nickname among the people he works with And they call him happy feet because when he spoke he would kind of move from one foot to the other and shift his weight and smile," said Hennigan.
But smiles were harder to come by today as Brent's church family searches for answers. Meanwhile, as authorities follow leads into his tragic death they believe God knows best.
"He sees the end from the beginning and God's perspective is so much better than ours and we just trust the Lord God knows so much more than we do... His way is higher than ours," said Hennigan.
At this time authorities have no suspects in the case. Brent leaves behind a loving wife and two small boys. To help the family with funeral expenses an account has been set up at the City Savings Bank and Trust in DeQuincy. If you would like to donate you can ask for the "Brent Cole Memorial Fund."
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Christensen Funeral Home in DeQuincy. Visitation is Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Pentecostal Church and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. followed by the funeral at one.
