I was born in Montgomery and lived in Gauley Bridge as a kid until the navy moved us over seas to Okinawa.
Most of my relatives are in that area. Gauley Bridge is about 40 miles west of Charleston on Rt-60.
Gauley Bridge!!! OMG, that was the most horrible part of the drive before 64 went through there!!!
But it's beautiful. I love the waterfall that's there. They've built it up as a little park now, although I haven't been there for about 10 years. The water is delicious too, and so cold!!
I'll never forget that drive though. When I was a kid (my mom drove from IL to VA twice a year), I would purposely go to sleep around Ashland, KY because I knew what was coming!! I remember crying telling my mom to slow down around those curves! LOL!
But while I love that 64 goes through, I miss the little shops along the way that have probably closed up by now. We used to stop at the Alpine Glass Factory, there were a couple Indian shops, and the Mystery House....haha.
Oh, the memories.

Chris, it's funny that you will excuse Wright for being a product of his society, but you won't allow that woman cashier the same excuse. I mean, maybe she was an older woman who was brought up in the civil rights movement too, and was taught certain things about blacks that she continues holding on to. Why not give her an excuse for her prejudice??
Not to minimize your story above, but if that's what discrimination is, then I, too, have been discriminated against.
I can't tell you the countless times that I have been waited on by a black person, usually women, who look at me like I'm the dirt of the earth. I've had them totally ignore me, throw money at me, and be snide. Oh, I'm sure it had something to do with my being white because when the black people were in their line, they laughed and joked and....well, you get the picture.
Am I injured? No. Instead, I felt pity for those people. I felt pity that for whatever reason they decided to belittle me because I'm white.
Did I go out and get angry? No. Did I speak about it to my friends? No, with the exception of those who might have been with me, but even then, it wasn't a big deal.
I've gotten speeding tickets by black cops but let go with a warning by white cops. Did I make that into a racial issue? No. Could I have? Certainly, but that would be stupid, especially since I truly was speeding!!
Your friend shouldn't feel so much discriminated against as feeling pity for white people who refuse to let issues go.
Discrimination can be found everywhere.
I was let go one time and not ticketed by a black police officer even though I was traveling 80+ MPH in a 55 zone. He was very kind to me, thankfully.

Interesting information Coop. I never knew this about you until now.
I grew up without racial prejudice of any kind so I find myself hurting when I read some of the comments about race, colour, and culture in some of these posts.
There are reasons why people are like they are. It has to do with how they've grown up and the culture they've grown up in. There are some ugly, mean, badly dressed, and poor English speakers represented by white middle class North Americans as well as those of other races and colour.
Yes very true.....and some of those are my relatives.

Bribery gets rid of discrimination quick! LOL!
I was pulled over ON MY BIRTHDAY for changing lanes in an intersection once. I was pulled over by a black cop. I have to admit I thought I was a goner for sure. Yes, I was guilty, but thought he'd get me not only for being white, but for also being a woman!
He came back to my car after getting my info and said because it was my birthday, he was letting me go with a warning....LOL!
I had to resist the urge to get out and kiss him!

I have been thru the Gauley Mountains on Rt 60 many many times. One time when I was a little boy I got car sick , they had to let me out to throw up.LOL!
In fact we will be going that way again in May.
The Mystery house has the VW Bug in the side of it right?

I believe so. It's been over 20 years since I've been there. I remember it looked very small on the outside compared to the inside.
I would love to take my kids through Rt 60 sometime. It's quite a long drive for being only 100 miles long! I'm planning on a trip this summer, so if it's timed right, we might just do that.

Yes! We were on vacation driving through Ontario on back country roads. We were talking and I wasn't paying attention and had no clue I was driving so fast until I saw the flashing lights coming up behind me.
I thought, "Oh no! I'm gonna get nailed for this and the fine will be huge!"
I don't know what in the world prevented me from getting dinged really good that day.
I've only ever gotten one ticket all the years I've been driving and that was by a white policeman when I was driving in the city going just a little bit over the speed limit.
I like to drive fast but I drive 'intuitively'. It works for me. It's like I've got an internal radar system. LOL.
I've been treated more rudely by WHITE people than I ever have by a person of another colour or race.

Which brings about an interesting question.
Could it be that there are times blacks might feel slighted by a white person thinking it's because of their color when the fact is, the white person is rude no matter what?
I'm pretty sure that could have been the case in the times I was slighted by someone black.
Sadly, some people are just rude and don't know how to deal with anyone from the human race.

True!
Could be they woke up on the wrong side of the bed too!
