well, wish i had hung on to the image of the pledge of allegiance in the opening of Congress, about half of them sitting down...but i think the argument is that you pledge allegiance to a flag, that represents an empire of men, that purport to uphold all of the qualities that you hold dear. And maybe most of them even do, at least at the beginning, but that is not even the point. The point is that you cannot serve two masters, i think.

So when you are shown evidence of duplicitousness, US soldiers guarding poppy fields while you suffer the scourge of heroin addiction rising again at home, or "terrorists" impossibly felling 3 towers with 2 airplanes, your pledge maybe makes it very difficult to judge righteously, because your heart is invested in your pledge. And you even become blind to those who should lead you to righteous judgement, the thousands of servicemen who will commit suicide this year, or the guy with all the access to the info making an easy 6 figures a year, with the perfect life, chucking it all to become a pariah.
