NOW, your admission that this is about setting things straight from your childhood and your convenient oversight of Notforsale's post speaks volumes.
Folks the reality is, even the self-proclaimed puritans among us fall short, all the while engaging in pretentious policing of the ethics and morality of others.
The reality is, your moralizing as a total outsider has zero impact, and very likely sets progress back a notch.
Thank you, Dr. Spock, but I referenced a story from childhood to correlate with the point. I didn't "Admit that this about setting things straight from my flippin' childhood." Why do you need to put words......INACCURATE words.....in my mouth? TOTLLY unfair. It was a reference point and your amateur psychology session is almost offensive.
I'm not sure what NFS posted. I haven't read every single post.
You think I'm setting back progress?? Wow, I have power that I never realized!! I'm posting on an internet board that about 1% of the UPC sees so save your hyperbole.
This is STILL about the simplicity of following through on an absolute, completely binding promise. Nothing more, nothing less. It is what it is and your poor attempts at psychology nor your evangelistic speaking about how I'm hurting the cause, would serve better as material for stand-up comedy than anything that's actually realistic.
I also grew up with the inconsistency. No TV at home. But when we were on vacation, whole other story.
I will never forget the day we came home from one such vacation and my grandmother, who was living with us at the time, had purchased a TV and moved it in while we were gone. I thought my mother was going to have a coronary.
I was too young (7 y/o) to understand it at the time, but to this day, I still find it odd that my parents got a TV from somewhere to watch the first moon landing. I can still remember watching that.
No wonder I had issues.
It's a serious problem, Azzan. And hotel-room TV watching is exactly the inconsistency...the lie....of signing the oath and not following through.
As far as this applies to licensed ministers. I think many are interpreting the clause for themselves as follows
"No TV" refers more to having the ability to watch TV.
For example, some condos come with TVs built in, but unless one orders cable, it's just a monitor to watch video on since the video resolution passed before the Affirmation Statement.
A minister may then preach "against TV", but not necessarily against owning a "TV"
bump

Apostolic is defined on AFF as:
There is One God. This one God reveals Himself distinctly as Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
The Son is God himself in a human form or "God manifested in the flesh" (1Tim 3:16)
Every sinner must repent of their sins.
That Jesus name baptism is the only biblical mode of water baptism.
That the Holy Ghost is for today and is received by faith with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues.
The saint will go on to strive to live a holy life, pleasing to God.
I grew up in a pastor's home and there was NO ONE that would go off on TV like my dad. It was legendary stuff. But when we checked into a hotel, the TV was on inside a minute every time and was NEVER off unless we were all asleep. SO, what message do you think was unspoken, but CLEARLY spoken to my young mind? What I witnessed repeatedly was hypocrisy and lying. I was hearing, "I don't really believe what I say in my sermons." If he didn't believe that, what else didn't he believe?

Very well. You didn't "admit"
The facts remain. You have an obsessive interest in some of these topics. At times your posting goes far beyond disagreement and criticism, and becomes purely vitriolic - even to the point of accusing your own father (in a public venue) of lying. It is beyond the pale to come on a public forum and blast those you disagree with - using the F - word. I am sorry you struggle with such serious issues concerning your childhood, but really, these things are better handled in private or in group counseling.
I apologize if I added to your pain in the last post, it certainly was not my intent. But, I think we can all better understand where you are coming from.

OK, for everyone who is against signing something which says they are doing one thing, but they are doing another, we ALL sign a form every year where dishonesty is a known issue amongst EVERYONE! It's called your 1040.
If you Barter or sell anything, such as at a garage sale, you are required to report any gains as income (the sale is higher than the purchase). Here is a statement directly from publication 525 from the Internal Revenue code;
"Bartering occurs when you exchange goods or services without exchanging money. An example of bartering is a plumber doing repair work for a dentist in exchange for dental services. The fair market value of goods and services received in exchange for goods or services you provide must be included in income in the year received."
If I preach for another pastor in exchange for other services, I’m supposed to report this as income. If I work on my neighbor’s car while he’s fixing my broken deck (I’m the mechanic and he’s the carpenter), we are supposed to report this.
Can I see a show of hands of how many on AFF obey this LAW????
Even your kids babysitting or mowing lawns for money, they are supposed to report this income. People in this Country, including Christians, look the other way when they fill out their income tax forms at the end of the year. I always laugh when someone tells me, “I’m totally honest on my Tax Return.”
Bump!

It aggravates me to no end, when people sit here and continue to argue about UPCI and television, and then say that internet is ok. I don't have a problem with either. I'm a music minister, and I have internet and Charter!
Furthermore, I do believe when DBK updates the UPCI church manual in the next few years that the Television Issue will be removed.
