So, Dan and Fellicity,
sorry, I explained what mental assent gets used as a phrase.
|
You explained what? Where?
There's a big difference between mental assent and fiducial faith and trust. Mere mental assent does not achieve spiritual regeneration.
The natural mind is emnity with God. There has to be a spiritual change take place before the natural mind can assent with the things of God and the mind of God.

Excuse me? Nothing is required? Who said that? Where? Which "good folks" are you referring to?!
Don't be putting words in people's mouths that were never spoken or even thought of and I'll thank you sir!

Ok sure Felicity.
Please provide your own words for the purpose in God's word commanding water baptism?

I said I use the phrase mental assent as a the closest word picture for a complete absence of action.
A renewed minded will certainly have visible works.
This issue is about origins and dominions being broken
AND
whether we have any role in demonstrating our agreement in this wonderful provision made possible by a substitutionary death at Calvary.
I await YOUR WORDS pertaining to purpose of God's word commanding water baptism.

I'll just restate what I've said so many times. Water baptism is essential. Not an option. Both Jesus and the apostles commanded it. That was followed up by the apostles practicing it. On the Day of Pentecost all the new believers as far as we can tell anyhow were baptized in the name of Jesus. So were converts after that.
There is no option far as I'm concerned.

The mental assent argument is a poor one -- kind of like a smoking pistol.

OK, I am reading YOUR words, and here is what I take away from them.
The only purpose for God's word commanding water baptism is because it is ESSENTIAL.
in a more basic vernacular....you need to be baptised just because.

I agree ... not an option ...but TB wants more ... he wants you to delve deeper ... into the purpose of baptism ... it wasn't just get wet ... was it ???
He wants to know if it washes away your sins ... if it remits your sins ... ?

Dan,
I never thought of my God as big on purposing an "outer show" of things.
You seem OK with believing God just does things for the sake of doing them.
