LOL! I loved this discussion. I knew some would disagree, but it was interesting anyway.
By the way, I think it was Rev. Randy who said that if Pastor's kids got tattoos (or whatever) and it was accepted, others would start to also. Well, my kids are NO DIFFERENT than anyone else's kids in church and they should not be made to feel like examples. That's one thing that drove my daughter away from church for a couple of years when she was about 17. She was so tired of being everyone's example, even though we never consciously tried to make her into that. No more should be expected of Pastor's kids than anyone else's, in my opinion. They did not choose the life of ministry; we did.
When my son came along six years later, we went overboard to let him know that he is the same as everyone else and no more is expected of him. He has never strayed from God and has a much healthier view of ministry at 18 than she did. At the church we pastor now in Jackson, probably half of the congregation or more do not even know that he is our son, and he is FINE with that.

Should I do a cross on my ankle or a heart on my shoulder?

Did someone say they were pro-tattoo? I might have missed it if they did, so if you would be so kind as to point that out, I'd be grateful.
What I heard people saying was that while they don't want to get a tattoo, they also wouldn't crucify someone who got one - especially a young person who is just trying their wings. In my book there is a big difference.
My son is 17. At this point, he still asks before he does something like this. And so far, we've told him that as long as we are providing his bed, the answer is no. But after he finishes school, the day may come that he will come home with one whether we like it or not. Will I disown him when that happens? no, absolutely not. And frankly, if, like Sherri's kids, he is doing it in his own mind as a Christian witness, then I will bite my tongue and be grateful that he loves the Lord.
Our kids will do lots of things in life that we won't approve of. One thing I've learned is that you have to choose your battles carefully. I will battle (the devil!) for his soul. But I won't battle over whether he makes a mark on his skin.

Margie...
I don't think anyone talked about disowning a kid because of a Tattoo...
I do find it amazing that people justify the tattoo as a part of their christian witness... I don't think that they should just do it with Tattoo's tho.. maybe a Cross Peircing in their cheek or like one I saw the other day up their arm..
Would you have a problem with him piercing his ear and wearing a cross to celebrate his Christianity?

I personally have a personal conviciton against piercings on me, but I don't think they're wrong generally; I just can't do it. I don't like to see people go overboard (just as in anything else) and have a zillion piercings or tattoos. I think anything in excess is wrong. Again......balance.

I wouldn't like it, but I don't think it's a sin. So far, he hasn't wanted to, so I'm not sweating it. In the past, my daughter has had both a pierced belly button and a pierced nose, which were just phases that she outgrew. They were not a big deal to me, although I personally hated the little diamond thing in her nose. She got it when she was spending a year as a missionary in Costa Rica, and it was culturally accepted there way more than here. So, no, I don't have a problem with piercings themselves (but I was glad that they were just a phase!!).
