That's the thing, Ferd. I'm not really supporting him. As of right now, I am not voting for anyone. All this hoopla about him is what got me started in looking into what he believes. I haven't read his positions on all the issues. Not yet, anyway. I have read enough to know that I can write off all this nonsense about him not being a Christian, his name and being a Muslim, and all this other nonsense people are using to try and discredit him. I have listened to some of the things he's said about Iraq, agree with him that it's time for our troops to come home, but don't think it can be done as fast as he says he wants to get it done. Still, I agree with him that it's time for them to come home.
Just a couple of days ago McCain said when they come home isn't too important. I heard him say it with his own mouth. He leaves me with the impression that he doesn't care as much about our troops as he pretends he does. He talks about Iraq and can't even get his facts straight.
I am still reading up on both these candidates to better understand their positions on the issues that are important to me. My two main issues are the war in Iraq and the economy. My position on other issues that are important to me are as follows:
The abortion issue is one I settled long ago. I think having an abortion is wrong, but I also think it's wrong for me to force that opinion on anyone. So that makes me pro-choice.
I don't really care one way or the other if gays get married. Their getting married is not going to affect my marriage one bit. I believe in my right to own guns (see thread I started the other day).
I think it would be better for our country to go to a national sales tax than keep the income tax system we have in place now.
Our healthcare system is broke and needs to be fixed. A good start would be to standardize the paperwork so so much money doesn't have to be spent on processing claims. I also think HMOs need to be done away with because they are too profit driven and not focused on the health of patients.
Our entire political system needs to be changed. Each party should get a chance to run the Whitehouse for 8 years at a time. They should take turns at it. This would eliminate much of the bickering that goes on over politics. I also think Senators and Congressmen should be limited in the number of terms they can serve. Two four year terms is the max they should be allowed.
Every State should have the option of the ballot initiative. It would give the people of each state the power to decide the course for their own state. If the people of a state vote something into law the Supreme Court should not have the right to intervene unless the law is a gross violation of the Constitution (like trying to bring back slavery or some other heinous thing)

Rico, those are some pretty wild ideas you have there! each party should have their turn? what about the green party? do they get 8 years? what about the Liberatarian party? do they get 8 years?
As for John McCain not caring about the troops... well thats just crazy. the context of McCains comments about it not being important when they come home is NOT that he wants them fighting a hot war for ever. It is the same context of our troops being in places like Korea, Japan and Germany.
it isnt important what date we close our bases of operations in those locations. in fact it is important that we keep those bases open!
the same with Iraq.

I know abortion and gays is a big issue for Christians. I can respect that and totally understand where those beliefs are coming from. I just don't see how we are going to stop the world from being the world, though. In fact, I don't see a mandate in scripture to even try stopping the world from being the world. We're supposed to save people from the world. The distance between the church and the world is growing, like it should be, regardless of what the standards keeping crowd thinks. Sometimes I think it would actually make more sense for us to stay out of politics completely, but then I realize there are other issues we are affected by that are connected to politics, like our money.
