This is a control issue, plain and simple.

If Kutless had violated a written rule, it would have been different. But, "trendy" is such a subjective term.

I mean, what amazes me is that our people wear the same suits and dresses that corporate America wears, and that's ok? The outfits that you see at General Conference define "trendy"!

If we really wanted to be "untrendy", we'd dress like the Amish.

But, in some cases "trendy" is ok, and in some cases it's not.

It's the UNWRITTEN rules that kill ya!

I preached at a church in November 2001, where the pastor was so conservative and "untrendy", that he made this statement, paraphrased:

"I've always flown an American flag on my house. But, since the attacks on the World Trade Center, it seems that everybody and their brother are now flying American flags. I'm going to take mine down, because I don't want to be like the rest of the world"

No joke......

I find it interesting that some of these guys will use this "forward" or "backward" thing in whatever way it suits their purposes.

Much of the time, they are bemoaning that modern penetcostals have left the "old paths" and yearn to go "backwards."

But when something is pointed out, (old-timers wearing jewelry or "bobbing" their hair or not drawing super-elitist lines of fellowship) that contradicts their revisionist view of pentecostal history, they insist that those folks were in error and were moving "forward."

So now "truth" has hardened and crystallized into whatever a group of preachers mostly around east Texas and southern and central California say it is, eh?

Remember in the late seventies when "granny" dresses with their mid-calf length came into style?

This was when mini-skirts went out.

The first thing as an enthusiastic young pentecostal convert that I questioned in the back of my mind about these "standards" was this:

I thought, well fine, now the girls can wear what's in style and still be "holy."

I was rather taken aback when the granny dresses were preached against for being "worldly fashion."

Now that was a mouthful...

The only thing I will say about the Bible School thing that was begun a few posts back, is that a lot of us have been in and through Bible School and surely we understand that there just might be another side to this story...

I am not dis-agreeing just remembering...

When I was in BS years ago they were after us about our hair too so about 30 of us went and got crew cuts and we got in trouble for that, cause they thought we were doing it to make a statement... and we were...
