It's when you give a couple or a person, in need, groceries. It is derived from giving a pound of butter, sugar, flour, etc.
So, what do you like to give people when you get groceries together?
Is that easier?
Where is Brother Epley?!!!!

I is supposed to know dat?
BTW If one is ingenious they could possibly under the auspices of the Church could approach a local grocer and or restaurant for a tax receipt, give gift certificates for a dinner, and or groceries that could be given to a proprietor/owner to help ofset his taxes.
The person in need wins, the owner wins, and the Church wins in having some thing to offer people in need!

I'm Canadian and I never heard the expression "pounding" before for what we call a grocery shower until I started posting on forums.
It's definitely an American term and a wonderful thing to do to help people out.
When we started what was basically a home missions church the small group of people we were meeting with had one of these for us and kept us in groceries for months. I'll never ever forget the kindness and generosity of those people.
They sacrificed SO much and were so good to us and amazing things were accomplished in just a short time.
All those groceries, staples and meat kept our grocery bill very low.

Back when I administered poundings, I liked to include stuff like broken noses, black eyes, etc.
I swore off all that stuff when I gave my heart to God completely though.

We used to routinely give poundings to evangelists.
I have received them myself preaching in the south.

When I first read the title of this thread, that's exactly what I thought was going on. We have certainly received our fair share of poundings.

Food offerings.
I remember getting a bunch of purple hulled peas once for preaching in NMississippi.

As far as spices, when young couples in the church get married I normally go to Big Lots and get them one of each spice they have. At 2/$1 for $20 I can get them every spice they have. Just a thought.

That's an idea. I generally stay away from giving sweets because I see so many people drop off donuts and such when a funeral has occurred. It's always a cheap thing to grab. I generally give a ham or a brisket.
But, for a pounding, some may like that. Good idea.
Spices is a good idea.
