I have danced the swing and the hustle. They teach the hustle at ballroom dancing? Go figure I learned it someplace else.

I have been involved with ballroom for nearly 10 years and find it to be a very elegant way to spend an evening. The competitions are a blast as well!
I remember being allowed to skip gym classes in JH (which at the time was great!) when they taught square dancing. But now I see ourselves doing a waltz (either standard or Viennese) or foxtrot at a dance (which is NOT allowed by the church) but see someone dancing like a Haitian voodoo dancer at the alter, and THAT is considered ok.
Has anyone else done any ballroom? Waltz, foxtrot, swing, tango, rumba, etc....

I think it has to do with anything else that was considered a no-no. It has to do with self control, modesty, and the war that anything not southeren gospel is of the dah-val!!
Some people need rules, because that absolutly have no control...at all. Because the church has leashed it's people(and this is what the outside world thinks), the outside chooses to not go in or stay because of this kind of stiffness. Dance is apart of how God made us. It's all in how we approach this and how we respond to this with our kids. My advise, don't over react. Explain what is approprate (each family has their set line of crossings), to your kids, or yourself. Some of the "so-called dancing" isn't dancing, but some of it is. And then there is holy ghost dancing.
I remember the movie "Footloose". Why was it they couldn't dance? I forget.

For me, I don't dance. Not because of rules and regulations but because I ain't got no timing at all. The groove went to someone else.
But I think it is like a lot of rules...there is an element of truth in it and then it gets broad brushed into all dancing is wrong.
There have been many a cases where in a slow dance people (especially teens who are not married) become stimulated as they rub their bodies together and then go make out some place and the little gal ends up pregnant.
I remember a message I heard one time where dancing led to prostitution...go figure that one out.
So then because some dancing is erotic the rule became no dancing. Like TV, there is some bad on it, but it also has some good stuff on it.
The bottom line is you can't regulate righteousness. You either are or you aren't and a rule is not going to make a bit of difference.
The dances you mentioned, I don't see anything wrong with it. People dress nice, act appropriately, enjoy an athletic event and go home. Oh well, just my rambling opinion.
