For background info, I have to tell you that my 6 months after I was saved, my Mom was saved as well. However, 3 years ago when I moved to Georgia, she left the UPC with a vengeance.

Back in November she started "hanging out" with and eventually dating someone. And things have progressed to the point where they are talking about marriage. As I hadn't seen her in over a year. or met her new friend. They decided to drive down for a visit (all above board, separate hotel rooms...etc).

So what is so noteworthy of all this, that I am actually making a whole thread about it?

Well, it has to do with his profession.

You see he is a Charismatic....

Pastor....

And my maybe future step-dad?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?

I mean, first of all....a Pastor of any kind....in my family? This is Mich you are talking about! And then to make that Pastor a "crazy charismatic"???

You gotta love God's sense of humor!

Now that I think about it, it would make a good reality show!

Actually, we got on quite well, as we have similar sense of humor. He didn't even mind when I called him a Crazy Charismatic (He even shortened it to "crazy-matic" ) and I learned to goodnaturedly roll my eyes with his constant use of the word legalism.

Of course...there was a quite heated discussion about Benny Hinn...
What made her leave with a vengeance?

John Wimber was AWESOME!!! He preached and taught a holy lifestyle and he would have been appalled at some stuff that goes on today. However, most of the Vineyard churches we've been around are pretty balanced and nothing like the ones that make the news.

I knew John and his family, as personal friends, when he was still with the California Yearly Meeting of Friends (Quakers, to you who don't know your church history). Yes, John would not recognize where the Vineyard movement has gone since his death. But, George Fox would have had the same kind of problem with the Friends movement after he died.

Seems to be a continuing problem with newly established Christ-centered movements.

The things you listed here are not typical of all Vineyard churches, nor are they typical of all Assembly of God, Church of God, UPC, etc. but they seem to occur across the spectrum of churches which believe that the gifting and empowering of the Holy Spirit is available in our century.

I also have a little trouble with snake handling, poison drinking folks who like to roll around in the dirt screaming incoherently.

I guess it really does take all kinds.
