Nobody really said sports is evil. The topic is being "wrapped up in sports"
Ah, sports are not the root of all evil but the love of sports is the root of evil. Sounds familiar

It concerns me to see so called apostolics wrapped up in sports. I feel that we have forgotten that Exodus 20:3 states "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." He is a jealous God and does not want us involved with things of this world. When we become wrapped up with entertaining our flesh we don't even realize that we have created a little god in our hearts. Don't get me wrong, i've struggled with the little G's myself but realize that serving God is far more sufficient than a sports game will ever be!

Actually, he's saying both.

Good grief. Ive seen some folk who had little g gods. Money, work, stuff, image, drugs, alcohol, all those things, i have seen with my own eyes.
You know what i have been warned about all my life but havent actually seen? Sports.
I tell you what i have seen. 10 years ago or so, i had a kid in my youth group. He was fatherless and he was an inner city kid. He didnt have much chance but his mother lived the lord.
I pushed him toward football. He got discipline in his life. I went to his games and and supported him in his sport. When he got mad at his coach for yelling at him, i convinced him it was important to listen and take the discipline and do what he was being asked.
He got a scholoship to play football in college. Not d1 but certainly better than the options he had sans football. That kid was at church sunday, as he usually is these days.
College is behind him, his future which is far better than the one that he would have had without sports is ahead of him. He loves the lord and is a fine young man.
You fellers with your anti-sports preaching need to take some serious stock on what really matters. I know men who will work until october, then quit their jobs and hunt all winter. Thier families live hand to mouth but hey, preacher is happy with them because they arent playing sports and come to church on sunday! Ive never heard one single preacher preach against hunting.

you guys need to get your story straight.
There is no little g god in football.
Excellent post. Football is no more a god to me than golf or hunting is to folks who enjoy those pastimes.
Any christian worth his salt will have his priorities right and not "worship" football while still enjoying it and feeling fervent about it and the teams he supports.
To me it is an insult to peoples intelligence, their walk with God, the Holy Spirit, and God's word to try and paint with a broad brush that something like football is a "god" because people enjoy it.
However having spent over half a century in or around old time Pentecost I am used to this mentality and take it for what it is.

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.
"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.
"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."
Quote from Ethel Goss (widow of 1st UPC Gen Supt. Howard Goss) book "The Winds of God"
I want to comment longer, but all I can muster is the will to say that if you think sports are somehow evil and of this world then you are dumber than a rock. I would rather my sons be heavily involved in sports than some of the insane churches I have seen.
I have a young man in my church who came to me several years ago to discuss some things. As we sat in my office he began to pour out his heart to me and explained that he was getting wrapped up in hockey and felt convicted. He began to tell me that he would go home after church and watch NHL hockey highlights. As we continued talking he began telling me that he felt a very cold chill going down his leg. I encouraged him to listen to the conviction he felt. That Sunday night he came into the sanctuary weeping during prayer and was clutching his hockey stick and a San Jose Sharks jersey to his chest. He laid them both on the altar and received victory from the bondage of sports!
