Well, believe me, there are a LOT of false prophets around us. Some aren't as well known in a larger sense, but they are making a living traveling all over the country "prophesying" with generalizations, educated guesses, cold reads and practicing old fashioned carnival side show theatrics. And people FLOCK to their meetings having itching ears, hungry for a "Word" from God.
Well I find it's an excuse for lazy people to not read their Bibles (THE Word) pray and have a relationship with Jesus (THE Living Word) and seek after God's Will (contained in THE Word). Very few people understand that the gifts of the Spirit CONFIRM the Word of God. We aren't in the OT needing a prophet to hear from God for us. We have the Word abiding in us. Jesus said that the Holy Spirit would lead us into all truth.
There are these sloppy Christians that are constantly trying to get their "Word" from God, showing up at church and acting like we're in the Book of Leviticus trying to approach the Holy of Holies or asking the High Priest to inquire of God for us, or paying the seer to tell us where their daddy's donkeys are. So some guy says, "There's somebody in this place having marital problems." Duh. Or they say, "Someone here is battling depression." Duh. I've sat through these services scratching my head and thinking, "This is NOT what I find the Scriptures teaching." It's a caricature. It's a sideshow. Real gifts of the Spirit edify the Body, do NOT lift up the vessel God uses and ALWAYS brings glory to God.
I was told recently by a so-called prophet that my knees and feet were being healed (I have never had feet/knee problems in my life) and that in a few days I would meet very important people that would lead to something being broadcast on television. it's been almost two months and nothing on tv. It's nutty. I believe in the real gifts of the Spirit, not this made for TV goofiness.

After I pointed out the false prophecies to a big supporter of the guy, the person said, "Well sometimes God shows prophets what MIGHT happen in the future."
Oh boy! Do we really want to go there?

yeah...i stopped chasing prophets a looong time ago....i have my own relationship with God and He knows how to get my attention.
I couldn't agree more. I have heard too many prophesies that were incorrect or didn't come to pass. I had rather God speak to me. I'm not nearly as gullible as I use to be.
Yup. Many are just a sideshow - and not even good ones. Cheap magic, and card readers.

I am a firm believer in the Old Paths
Articles on such subjects as "The New Birth," will be accepted, whether they teach that the new birth takes place before baptism in water and Spirit, or that the new birth consists of baptism of water and Spirit. - THE PENTECOSTAL HERALD Dec. 1945
"It is doubtful if any Trinitarian Pentecostals have ever professed to believe in three gods, and Oneness Pentecostals should not claim that they do." - Daniel Segraves

And there are those still doing the "old leg lengthening trick!" (said with my best Don Adams -Maxwell Smart, voice). When I hear of ANY healing preacher who ever did this stunt, it automatically puts them into the huckster column.

How impressive does it have to be before it is pronounced genuine? Turning rods into snakes wasn't good enough, but one snake eating up other snakes was. I guess.

I dunno, but I DO know that used to be fairly heavy into magic and often did small tricks for fellow church members. They usually enjoyed them, that is until I pulled something out which was apparently TOO "amazing" (and unexplainable by them) and was thus rebuked for performing what must have been REAL magic. Ya, everything I did was fake up until that point......
