Your system could also be over heating. It is very important to open the panel and blow out all the dust using either a can of compressed air or air compressor.

Do you run updated anti-virus/anti spyware?

Also a background running program like a virus scanner will make the HD run and if it's a bloatware program like Norton it may use a lot of system resources.

You should be able to go into taskmanager and processes and see what is hogging CPU
It tosses back & forth between firefox & system idle process.

AND check fans. The dust can weigh down the fans so they are working over time and not moving as fast as they should. Ball bearings go bad too, no oil. Especially the CPU fan, and make sure there are no loose cables that can stop a fan

Re: Anyone Ever Replace A Hard Drive?

Just had a brother in my old Church give me a call & he is pretty good with computers (he has six running in his apartment) as he has his own digital graphics company & he suspects I have virus(s) that have burrowed into my computer.
AVG hasn't caught anything on my computer but he can boot up my computer jhooked up to his laptop I think and catch it there.

It's firefox

I suggest the two symptoms are unrelated. Do what RW and myself suggested earlier, see if the whine is really coming from the HD and not a fan

With cpu usage at 100% almost constantly its probly just fans kicking on high to keep the thing cool. It also means you probably have a few background process that are taking alot of resources. Probably viruses. (Dying harddrives can make noises too though)

One way to manually check and see if you have any viruses is to do ctrl alt del and click on the processes tab. Anything that doesn't sound legit or that you don't know what is just type its name into google (There probably won't be over 40 processes total). This isn't foolproof because some viruses have ways of avoiding being shown here but this method has worked well for me in the past. Usually google also tells you methods to remove any viruses you find this way.

yes firefox is a memory hog. Mines memory usage from firefox alone has been up to over 600000 K before.

Re: Anyone Ever Replace A Hard Drive?

It's funny. I remember when FF was the "it" browsers for being the opposite of IE....

Anyways, Ron wanted to remind you NOT to touch the mother board or the ram chips unless you are grounded. Touch the case to discharge any static electricity
