Re: UPCI is getting BIGGER!
99% of the time it is a matter of discipline and self-control. A very small portion have true physical problems at the root of their morbid obesity.
I have never been obese, but I just lost 33lbs and am more fit than I have been in 10yrs and I am 55yrs old. I have changed my diet, increased my exercise and am in training for an Ironman Triathlon. Without saying much about it from the pulpit, I have challenged numerous people at NLC. They know I'm running and have seen a change in my fitness level, but I still don't berate that "fulfilled" population (which are very few) who attend NLC.

Re: UPCI is getting BIGGER!
It is a national problem, but IMO, there is a larger percentage of obese people in the UPC than the nation. Not counting the children, there are probably 6 people in my church of normal weight.

Re: UPCI is getting BIGGER!
I saw thin and large women at General Conference.
Could it be having all our socials with excellent cooks or eating late at night after church is common too.

Re: UPCI is getting BIGGER!
As much as I hate it, I have to apologize to AFF for calling some of us jerks. I guess I should have reported myself.

Well my husband is a diabetic that has been battling weight issues. He has lost 80 lbs this year so far, due to meds, a little exercise and a great doctor.
And he's not a preacher.

With this kind of growth we will have to double the seating in a few years and charge $100 per person for conference fees.
I was watching a preacher who had to be over 500 lbs, so big he couldn’t stand up, I was wondering how he could justify preaching against smoking being harmful to your body, or being addicted to alcohol.

American problem, but preachers and church folk take the cake (no pun intended)! Late night services (especially Sunday Nights), then splurging at the fast food restaurants, italian cuisines or buffets. Of course going to sleep right afterward. Not to mention the skinny choices (again no pun intended) of recreation and fun. Let's see, eat here or there. Choices, choices, choices.
To be fair, it's something we should all be concerned with. Preachers get the scrutiny because of there position, but it's an entire North America and church world problem. We are a land of blessing. Even the most poor among us is not starving. Nothing to be snarky about, and surely nothing to point fingers about. Let's do better church!
This is another reason why fasting is a great idea. It helps us to connect with the majority of the world that is doing without. Humility that breeds compassion.
