Well, Ive had this explained two different ways.
1. Take up means "To do Away With"
Which sorta makes sence with the way Paul cast the serpent into the fire after it bit him.
2.The signs shall follow, not that you should follow the signs.

I mean if it came down to a sinners life and them being cast into the pit you better believe Id be pickin up a snake haha.
