I just replaced my over 30 yr old central air. We went with Bryant which is owned by Carrier I believe.
15 seer with 10 yr waranty was .....6200 bucks OUCH
We have hot water basboard heat so our Ac has to use an air exchanger instead of going the the furnace. Our air exchanger had to be taken apart and reassembled in the attic becaise our low roof line would not allow the unit to be taken into the attic whole. Also our unit sets on the flat roof of our garage...so extra bucks for extra labor:
I've only ran it once so far but have found it to be extremely quiet.
My heating unit is separate and will not need to be replaced. Thankful for that!

I have to buy a new air conditioning system and they are not cheap. Not only that but the reviews on all the systems I have looked at are not good.
Seems the older units have better reviews than the new ones.
Anyone work in this business have any input?
My neighbor works for Carrier and he recommends them.
A man at my church works for Lennox and he recommends them.
A salesman said stay away from Amana-Goodman-Janitrol, Coleman-York.
Another salesman said now is the time to buy Amana because their record is so bad they now offer a lifetime warranty on the compressor.
Anybody have any suggestions?
Flip a coin??

Esther my advice would be to pay the extra for the extra 5 years of warranty. I know it's $500.00 but the way things are made now days, I would rather have the protection than have to foot the bill for another unit.
I know all of the appliances that we install now are being made cheaper and cheaper and warranties are getting shorter and shorter. Just for your protection, I think it'd be worth it.

Frigidare and Gibson. Thats mainly what I install. Very good units, with exceptional warranties. Tranes and Carriers are good units, but, remember, you're paying around $1500 more for the name. I installed my 12 Seer 3.5 T split system 3 years ago (Frigidare). Absolutely no problems. Excellent systems and excellent installation. Of, I installed it myself.

My child just bought a Ruud I believe and they are in a company with more that 1 name like Rheem. She bought her house 1 month ago. She told me that the 10 people that bid steered her to some tax credits from the government. She is watching her money since she is just graduating. There are around 4 names of compressors. Tecumseh, Bristol, copeland and i believe Lennox makes their own. My daughter is an Architectural engineer and will in her job specify several million dollars of equipment a week. I also would put carrier and Lennox above the others you mention. When I build a new office, I usually do not get very involved in brand except for Mechanical contractors.
If Amana is bad, the lifetime warranty may exclude people coming out and labor material to replace it. I thought Whirlpool bought amana.
The man in church and the neighbor are far superior reviews than online. Many online reviews are planted by companies.

OA, does the 2009-10 $1500.00 tax credit (up to) apply to high efficiency AC units? This may be something Ester should factor in.

I agree with you.
