My husband's nephew is on his way to Iraq. He is coming to Austin, on leave, for a few days next week before he is shipped out.

He and our son have been best friends all their lives. Our son had plans and canceled everything when he called to say he was flying in. He's going to surprise his father. Our son is picking him up at the airport.

The kindest boy! I wonder how much he will change when he comes back. He's in the Marines.

I talked with him the other day and asked him what he thought about the media. He said, "The media is a soldiers worst enemy."

Pretty smart fellow. He looks at things in a logical manner and I'm not worried about him. It's just that he has such a tender heart. I'd hate to see that change.

It'd be sad if he came back with a calloused heart. If I could, I'd be out there, too.

This is part of the message that I received from my cousin:

"...when we finish our missions you can see in their eyes that they do appreciate it, but the sad part is that it will go unnoticed and nobody hears about it except from what we tell them... ...they (the iraqi's) remind me of [the] people in mexico. They will give you all they have but expect nothing in return..."

3 weeks and 3 days ... and he comes home..
