Re: UPCI Foreign Missions Division Interview
My parents are long time UPC missionaries, and I know Bro Abernathy very well. My parents have never had any negative financial issues with headquarters, and I do know Bro Abernathy to be a wonderful, truthful man.

Re: UPCI Foreign Missions Division Interview
I never meant to cast any doubt on any one person...sorry if it sounded like that. I was asking about a system and if it could be bettered. No ill intended.

I wasn't necessarily responding to your comment, I was just commenting on the thread based on my experiences.

Re: UPCI Foreign Missions Division Interview
Thanks that made me feel better. I never want to intentionally hurt anyone.

Sister Alvear, I must have heard the same things as you have.. probably not been around as much as some... or known as many missionaries as you have... but been concerned at things I've heard. I have always felt more comfortable giving cash offerings to most missionaries that come through my church. I always felt like a $100 or $200 offering given directly to them had to be as helpful as mailing in $20 a month and having headquarters take their part. I might be wrong... that's ok, but that is just how I feel about it.
I love missionaries, I am not sure what is the best way to do it.. guess that UPCI is doing a pretty good job... I wish it could be better though.
About 7 years ago before my ex left, Craig did a lot of carpentry work inside Bro. Robert Nix's trailer while he was on deputation. After a day of Bro. Nix and Craig running around getting materials for the trailer and Craig working... Craig called to tell me he was bringing them home for dinner in about an hour...LOL
Our house was in the middle of construction and thankfully, they didn't seem to mind the dust, drywall buckets and other construction materials lying around... believe me, it was a mess. We just set up a table in the middle of it all and had a great time of fellowship. At least I am a good cook... lol
I will never forget Bro. Nix looking over in the middle of dinner and asking Craig "Son, do you shave much?" lol Craig hated to shave and only shaved for church. He got a lecture on being clean shaven. ![Wink](http://www.apostolicfriendsforum.com/images/smilies/wink.gif) Gotta love Bro. Nix.
It was an honor to have them in our home and used to keep in touch with them after they left here.
Don't know why I rambled... but I have a lot of admiration for those overseas.. I hope to support missions more than I have in the past.

upci keeps 23% missions giving for overhead
I met a pastor who said they send missionary funds directly to missionarys, because of the 23% over head the upci district takes out. That means if 4 million per yr is collected overall, they keep 1 million to answer the phone and do the book work. Do people who work there make that much.Do other organiaztions keep that much, or are they more efficient than that? The bottom line is if you donate to missions, you want it to go to do the lords work. Is it wrong to even question anyone on this?

I'm pretty sure those figures are way off. I think it's less than 5%.
