Gee. A little harsh aren't we?
What's wrong with showing mercy to a first time offender, especially when his wife is asking the court to show leniency?

Re: Bishop Weeks Pleads Guilty to Assault Charges
There's no excuse for his despicable actions. But I am glad his KICKED AND BEATEN wife asked the courts for mercy! I am glad the courts showed mercy.
Now if the lady who was actually hurt in all of this can forgive.....
I'm not justifying what he did-- We'll never understand what happened that day. But JB-W can forgive, I believe I can too.
I may have never kicked and beat a woman, but I honestly know that I have driven a few nails into the hands of a man who did nothing but love me.

Re: Bishop Weeks Pleads Guilty to Assault Charges
The reason it happens more than once is, usually the wife forgives, doesn't want her husband to go to jail. The husband doesn't go to jail the first time. Their are no consequences. So what about the second time for all of you that think it's ok to beat your wife and have no consequences the first time. What about personal accountability?
Have any of you that posted that ever been beaten? Have your children watched your spouse beat you? Once? Once is enough to last forever. Nobody has the right to put their hands on another without there being consequences! Period!

Re: Bishop Weeks Pleads Guilty to Assault Charges
This is a decision between her end her husband.
They've both gone through a lot.
They've made their decision .
The wife has decided to forgive her husband.
People should simply respect that, accept it, and wish them the best.

Y'all just don't get it. Of course she has forgiven him. It's what wives do when beaten by their spouse. Ask a police officer what the wife says when they show up and arrest the husband. Ask a counselor that deals with the aftermath of spousal abuse, ask the DA that tries to prosecute. Ask the children that watch usually their mother beaten by their father. It doesn't just happen ONCE! If you ask a wife why she stays with him she will tell you she loves him, he says he's sorry, it will never happen again. But then it does.

Re: Bishop Weeks Pleads Guilty to Assault Charges
Wouldn't this disqualify him from the office of a Bishop?
Tit 1:7 For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;

This all sounds good, but the reality is that most first time offenders get probation, unless it's for a crime like murder, arson, etc.

If it does happen again, then, well, I just don't know. If she should leave him, divorce him whatever, could she even marry again in that situation-- he didn't cheat on her? If she left him for a reason not Biblical, couldn't he just write the whole "mistake of marrying JB-W" off and marry someone else in the future?
Wouldn't it be better for her to forgive him? Wouldn't it be wise of for the 2 of them TOGETHER to seek the face of God AND professional help?
I don't think anyone does any one particular sin just once, when there is not an immediate and strong-handed punishment. But to not give anyone the benefit of doubt is wrong, presumptuous, and self-condemning. After all, they do still love each other.
