Lawmakers must act on better energy policy
In April 2002, Democratic Sen. John Kerry and his colleagues celebrated the defeat of a bill that would have allowed oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. With gas and home heating prices so high, Congress should immediately vote for President Bush's proposal to begin drilling in Alaska for economic and security reasons.
The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries' monopolistic pricing schemes have caused unstable oil prices that continue to harm the U.S. economy. There needs to be a competitive world price for oil.
Some suggest that our president went to war for oil when, at the same time, there are senators in our country voting to maintain our dependency on foreign oil -- a sure thing in the years to come. They can't have it both ways.
