In all fairness, at the time those people were dying, she probably would not have had the freedom to sing in that venue. I do understand what you are saying though, and I do think she may have learned a lesson in all of this. I am just saying that I would not be surprised to find out that she is genuinely surprised at the depth of the negative response she received.
I guess I need to be careful that some don't begin to see me as a militant radical myself. I just tend to be more measured in my reaction to things and try to dig for the possible explanations.
I just really don't get it. A specific song for a specific event. How hard would that have been for her to do? And there is a big difference in what you might sing at a club and what you sing at an event like this, eccentric or not. I don't see her as a radical at all, but I do think she might have had an inkling that the song she sang might just cause some controversy and maybe even thought it might help her career.
I want to be radical for Jesus, but not militant.

Many Black people are not patriotic.this is not a stereotype
just saying in general, many are not.
I sought to find out why and was told that for
many generations, they were not allowed to celebrate
National holidays so therefore its not ingrained in the
culture like it is for whites and others. When you feel
left out of the country you live in naturally you'd feel
that way
Mark, I would not necessarily say "Not patriotic", but more like patriotic in different ways. You are going to find many Black people who love our country, will die for our country, and do everything in their power to make our country a better place, who find it hard to get misty eyed and full of American pride about the founding fathers and some of the historic writings. Some of those beautiful words ring hollow to people who know that they were not meant for them and did not apply to people like them.

Jehovah witnesses do not say the pledge, do not salute or pay homage to the flag, I'm sure that they do not sing the national anthem, they do not celebrate the national holidays. In addition to all of the other things I stated earlier, being in that environment can certainly affect your appreciation for how people feel about these symbols...even after you leave the JWs.
I'm sure! Still, her being a professional and knowing what was expected...

I was confused as well, but after reading her bio, it all made sense. That is the nature of her entire career, blending songs in a creative way. She just did not have the understanding that some people would be tremendously offended by the blending of a select handful of songs. She blended "Dixie" with some slave song in the Deep South years ago and got away with it, so maybe she thinks she is Teflon

Wow, I hadn't thought about that. And the ones that were brutalized for trying to get a drink of water or eat, or vote. Did you ever notice how some people that spat, cursed and taunted black people as we saw on tv back in those days. Their faces were so ugly when they did that. Twisted with hate.

Cn one thing that really bothered me as a child (as I lay on the couch) is that I would see pictures of lynchings and I would see the perpetrators posing and smiling with the bodies. Even at that young age, I realized that most of those perpetrators had to still be living...many were documented as law enforcement, etc. It sent a message to me that noone was tracked down and charged with murder even though we were now enlightened and had photographic evidence. I'm sure that that thought never did cross the minds of most of my White classmates, and I would not really expect it to.
My point is that you always have to leave room for the human element and the fact that all have different experiences, and ultimately we are the sum total of those experiences.

How do you really, really feel, Mike? Come on, don't be shy.
yeah I guess I should calm down.
At the risk of sounding really racist or self-righteous, I just hate when Black people do things that are stupid on a national level. It makes all the rest of us look bad. It gives credence to the thoughts of those who would want to second guess the decency of all the other Blacks.
Just like when you hear a bad story of a new believer in an Apostolic church where "standards" become the "gospel" and they end up backsliding to become a worse demon than before.
I was listening to the Tom Joyner moring show on the way to work one morning. One of his guests made the comment when referring to the 9/11 perpetrators: "I was so glad that none of those guys were Black."
Then they both laughed a little bit in a relief that was mutually shared. I chuckled to myself to, sharing that same relief.
