1 Cor 16:13 Watch ye, stand fast in the faith, quit you like men, be strong.

2 Tim 2:3 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

Not quite what I was saying, but I'm sure you couldn't resist.

Also, pretty sure Paul wasn't in the military, though he was familiar, as most were in that time. He used their language to communicate truths. I'm talking about these drill sargent types that actually think the goal is to break people, get them to do what you want them to do, tell them shine their boots better, suck it up and that they don't want to hear it, etc.... Not quite the epitome of serving one another.

So, it's like "what doesn't kill me makes me stronger"? That's cool. Then those beatings that will continue until morale improves -- they shouldn't even stop if morale does improve! The more the better!

So who on AFF resembles a drill sargent to you?

I haven't read every post but I'd say a lot of what I have read sounds more similar to what Paul wrote in the verses I quoted than it does to the caricature of the hardnosed drill sargent that you speak of.

It's more like. Make the decision to get out of a bad situation. Decide not to be controlled by anyone and own your own life.

It’s perfectly fine to say "so and so is a bad guy. they did this and this and here is the proof"

it is not perfectly fine to run with woe is me and everyone is mean to me and my life sucks because other people make it suck.

These are very different things.

*disclaimer for the unstable. I do not advocate telling people who have suffered abuse to "get over it". I do however, encourage them to seek professional help and not talk about their real life horror on internet forums where no one can control the direction of the conversation

**Second disclaimer. The first disclaimer is a general announcement and is not meant to be directed at any one person in particular.

reminds me of the famous poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson

1.
Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
"Forward, the Light Brigade!
"Charge for the guns!" he said:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

2.
"Forward, the Light Brigade!"
Was there a man dismay'd?
Not tho' the soldier knew
Someone had blunder'd:
Theirs not to make reply,
Theirs not to reason why,
Theirs but to do and die:
Into the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

3.
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
Rode the six hundred.

4.
Flash'd all their sabres bare,
Flash'd as they turn'd in air,
Sabring the gunners there,
Charging an army, while
All the world wonder'd:
Plunged in the battery-smoke
Right thro' the line they broke;
Cossack and Russian
Reel'd from the sabre stroke
Shatter'd and sunder'd.
Then they rode back, but not
Not the six hundred.

5.
Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon behind them
Volley'd and thunder'd;
Storm'd at with shot and shell,
While horse and hero fell,
They that had fought so well
Came thro' the jaws of Death
Back from the mouth of Hell,
All that was left of them,
Left of six hundred.

6.
When can their glory fade?
O the wild charge they made!
All the world wondered.
Honor the charge they made,
Honor the Light Brigade,
Noble six hundred.
