Dear Brothers and sisters and friends in missions. The year of 2010 has come to a close and we now look back over it and reflect the great victories and agonizing trials only to come to one conclusion…we made deep inroads into the darkness of paganism with the light of the gospel. Our Commander in Chief has been right by our side every moment.
In the field of labor I am responsible for we dedicated two new churches in the state of Minas Gerias. Ponte alto and Sao Joao Batista da Gloria. In Mato Grosso we are building in the city of Navirai and with God’s help we will have the church there completely finished in 2011. We have waded through every obstacle imaginable in this area. Yet we wave the victory banner high today for much has been accomplished. We know the devil seems to fight harder in some places than others. Here he has fought us every step of the way! Yet as I write this letter I am looking at pictures of a beautiful building going up.
Our little group of people in Paraguay is growing in understanding of the word of the Lord. Brother Moreno (my first convert) there is already bringing little sermonettes! It is so marvelous seeing him open his Bible and giving a thought, uttering a prayer and singing a song. I so well remember the first time I saw him chained by the rituals of another religion and its traditions of fear, distant from the living God, yet so hungry for spiritual matters.
This year we also opened up a new work in the state of Parana in the mist of the wheat fields in a little area called Ibaiti.
I have something noble I would like to share with you in this letter. In January I plan to go with a group to what is called the Pantanal of Mato Grosso to visit an Indian tribe in Aldeia Lagoinha.. To get there I will travel over 1,340 kms one way! Part of it will be dirt roads. These Indians have a good relationship with our church and 2 of them came with one-way tickets to our convention to ask that we come and teach and help them.
This week I talked to two Indian pastors that are a part of our work and they asked for flip-flops for the children of their village, clothes, Bibles and anything we could bring. They are so poor and desperate. Their life is submerged in suffering, lack of food, and they are still being killed, whether by diseases encountered when their lands are invaded, by starvation as they are driven from their hunting grounds, or by the hit men who are employed by ranchers and ‘landowners’ to keep Indians away.
There remains an endemic racism towards Indians in Brazil that makes all this possible – in law they are still considered minors. Brazil is one of only two South American countries that does not recognize tribal land ownership.
Those that are not reached by the gospel soon drown their troubles in drugs and alcohol.
Not too often do I ask for help but I need your help in more ways than one. First I need your prayers. Then I need help with gasoline and expenses to get there and back. This is a new effort on my part. I am willing to leave the comforts of my home, have someone watch over my home church and all that involves to reach out to these people but I cannot do it alone.
We have been reminded that Jesus was born but to millions the fact that He was born, lived and died for the purpose of bringing a lost world back to the Savior is in vain UNLESS we do our part to reach them with the GOOD NEWS.
My whole family will be with me on this trip, my wife with her servant love and humility, my son Hugo Jr with his guitar to play and my daughter Carol to sing the songs about Jesus.
Will you help us before it is too late for them to hear?
