Then why not have television advertisements with audio only and still pictures (like a powerpoint)? This way they do not have to refuse to use the medium that has the potential to reach more people than any other medium in existence (yes, even than the internet).

I am not really the one to answer that question. I am con, and could be considered by some ultra con, considering the circles I am in and my background... but I personally don't see a problem advertising on TV if someone wants to do that. I definitely think it could and would be effective to get people to your church.... etc. But I also want to say that I feel strongly that it is best, and most conducive to the spiritual development of ANY individual, to not have a TV in one's home. Having said that, I do sympathize with the sentiment against using visual media as a means of primary communication. The theory goes that visual media (including all forms from movies, video games, tv shows, visual news as opposed to written news etc.) has contributed greatly to the "dumbing down" of society. I think that is a strong argument and I understand those men's views. But I don't think that should preclude the use of video technology as an effective tool, and in some ways the most effective tool, for some kinds of communication. Anyway, now having gone off on a tangent, it's a personal decision as to how they are going to promote their church to the community! I don't see a problem with advertising your church on TV... I do see a problem with visual media becoming a primary means of entertainment, communication, information gathering, and education. Visual media should never replace comunication via the spoken and/or written word.

Bob...how you articulate your response is one that I could respect...and not just because it supports something I support but it talks about your personal belief. I think it shows because I have a personal opposition to it, I am not going to stop someone who chooses this venue to do so.

I do not have a dog in this fight since I am not UPC but I think if advertisement ALONE were the issue probably some accomodations could be made. But most see this as a signal to lift the ban on television period. In all honesty in the 50 mile area where I pastor I do NOT know one UPC preacher that makes any type of stand on television. Their churches are full of them.
Their officials in the churches have them without any reprocussions. I have never understood the hoopla over it? I am afraid the UPC will follow the path of the PAW in time to come particuarly if those attending the Tulsa meeting do pull out.

Well, since so many already own TV's and watch it that would not be a bad thing either - - keeps them from having to tell little white lies.

I think the push for television advertisement is NOT to win the lost but to proselyte other Pentecostals to the bigger churches that can afford to advertise. GREED is the motive NOT a burden for the lost for the most.

Would you feel the same if you were the large church?
Might not some of the small churches become larger?

Given that all of the first generation of OP pioneers were Trintarian and fellowshipped freely with Trinitarians;
and, given that in much of the country the "holiness standards" were not what they are today;
can you see why many would see the same things as you've described and call it a "return to their roots" and not an apostacy?
