Many times the rest of the hairdo was reserved and pulled back into a bun. That placed that much more emphasis on the "poof". I ran across some pics of my nieces from the poof area and had a good laugh awhile back.

Still not a good example. That one does not stick out far enough and is too wide. It doesn't jump out at you like most poofs did.
It was like a furry animal on top of women's heads were going to attack you.

I can't remember where I saw them. Might have been at someones home!
However last year when I did a google search for something like "Pentecostal churches" or something a rural Arkansas church came up that had pics of their Christmas or some other kind of banquet and a lot of the women had poofs!!!!
It was like stepping back in time. I was amazed.
