It was used to Separate the Apostolic Movement from the West Coast, Jesus Freak movement.
If you look at some of the early Oneness Pioneers, they too had facial hair.
There were quite a few Apostolic Preachers (Cornwell- Tulsa, OK and Larry Booker, Rio Grande, CA) that came out of that "hippie" movement with a strong conviction against that life style. Like I have stated before, it is not about the facial hair, but about the spirit and Attitude behind it, that which is of a rebellious, even a sexual immorality one. (not saying that if you have one that you stand for that.)
Would you let you kid get a fohawk, tattoos, body piercings, etc? Not I, that is things that the Occult use to mark their followers. We just need to go back to common sense Christian living.
1) Is it against the teachings of Christ
2) Has the Spirit convicted me, my parents (as a child), or the pastor that I sit under.
We need to be a Holy People, a Chosen nation, that is called out and separate from our former life.

Re: Why I Left the UPC
You are quite mistaken!
Having facial hair has NOTHING to do with rebellion or sexual immorality. There are plenty of men that have been quite immoral and adulterous in the "Apostolic" movement with smooth faces, so again - You are mistaken. Most Christians outside the small UPC in particular have never heard of such a thing as it is a sin to have facial hair. It is strictly a control issue. Men have used that to manipulate men for years and it is simply no where in the Bible that you can justify preaching against facial hair.
Do you shave your eyebrows?

I think you could say most of the time it has nothing to do with rebellion, it does sometimes, personally i have never heard anyone preach it as SIN although of course "rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft" which sounds pretty serious to me, i have always heard it preached as a preference, which any leader secular or church could have,i just dont think a pastor should make it come to a point of being rebellion, by pushing it to that precipice.

Re: Why I Left the UPC
I have heard it preached that it is a sin and rebellion against authority and the hippies did it and we are not going to be hippies or look like, walk like, talk like and have facial hair and beards like the hippies. I heard NAU say on many occasions - "The homosexual wears the beard." It was, is and will continue to be - a control issue.
If Brother Urshan preached against it - you know it HAD to be a sin! ;-)

Men have been wearing facial hair long LONG before the 60s
The 60s are long gone, accusing someone of having a beard out of rebellion is far worse than having a beard. That makes the accusor a false accusor and a judge
Vans were also associated with the rebellious hippie culture. Did the church take a stand on that? How about bell bottems? Eventually it just makes the UPC look asinine for reacting that way and making it a standard for everyone IN the church and outside the church.
Id be concerned with whether or not the kid is being taught about christ not worrying about whether he will go to hell for his hair. Teach them to pray. Teach the doctrines of Christ, not a church man made rule

True. Has away of making us self conscious.

Re: Why I Left the UPC
They plucked the beard of Christ. I guess our Saviour was in sin according to the anti-facial hair people.

Re: Why I Left the UPC
Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard." ( Leviticus 19:27)//so we know Jews had a beard...however I do understand we do not want to look like Hippies....I like what Brother Epley said (of course about men) you can have a beard and go to heaven but not from my church....
Culture plays a great part....
