Whoah...I honestly didn't realize that. We probably won't catch you off guard. I guess then the only surprise will be that there are not a whole lot of churches in the UPC quite like that. There are some though. I've been checking out Mark's church and a few others. We just honestly always expect that God will meet us in a real way everytime we come to church.

You didn't realize that this was why rcgraig needed knee replacement surgery?

Titus2woman on AFF
"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.
"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.
"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."

He is a monster on the organ.. I wonder if people who are not really into musuic even realize how good he is. I was letting some of my musicians listen to him (one of whom is incredible himself), they are all pushing me to get him down here.

The funny thing is that since our churches have the same name and are in the same org and have a lot of minorities, they were already on my radar as someone that I wanted to make contact with at some point. I didn't realize who Mark was at first here on AFF...small world

Keep reading the histrory of Israel and Judah. You find that what happened most often was that a generation arose that professed to "know God" but in reality had no clue as to what God was about to do. Notice especially and compare the prophecises of Jeremiah with those of his contemporaries.
Also, follow the ministries of Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi. Check out Ezra 3:12 - the "old men wept..." while the young men shouted. I heard a great preacher preach a sermon at GC on this once and he preached it all around the country after that...
He complained that only the "old men" knew what the glory of God was like but that the "young men" were ignorant. He went on to try and tell us that there were men alive in the days of Ezra who were present when Solomon's temple was dedicated. ???
It was at that point that I knew that I was NOT hearing from God that day. C'mon... at least READ the passages you're going to be preaching on!
The entire book of Haggai is a rebuke to those "old men" and the true prophet of God spares nothing in condemning the "old men" for their blindness.
That's one big difference that I've seen in the various "generations" today... there's a younger generation that actually reads the Book.
Finally, look at how those who followed "the old paths" treated Jesus Christ. You still see a lot of that going on today.
Goodness, did you used to be a preacher or something?
This is the tenor of the entire thread, good job P-
I think people, especially the church are making a huge mistake discounting the huge difference between the greatest generation, the baby boomers, the x-gen and now the y-generation.
I think it is so interesting how we are taking a look at business models and organizational trends keeping in mind these differences.
The UPC as you/we 40 somethings know it now will cease to exist when our kids and grandkids are our age IF we insist on maintaining this Old Tyme Religion, that was good enough for grampa and its good enough for me...
So, for example, if his father preaches against shorts...the son should go out and wear shorts just to prove a point? (which you refer to as "getting a backbone? )
And what good would you expect that to do?
As usual, you polarize all the way to the other extreme, wearing shorts will lead you to lust, then pornography, then drugs, then murder and then death, face down in the gutter.
Now, back to reality. Shame on the youngster who believes he needs to preach it like his father preached it only because that was what grampa preached and everyone is watching you.
Have the courage to consider what you believe and for the right reasons.
