I've been considering going back to school to get a degree in counseling...can you give more details, please?
I, too, graduated from BC and loved every minute of my time there. I didn't get married until many years later....I was honestly there to learn the skills needed to be a music director. After doing music for several years I realized my heart was actually in education, so I went back to school and got my Master's in education. I taught in public school and am now in administration in a Christian school and am seeing such a need for Christian counselors.
I can see both sides of this thread: Bible school was a wonderful experience I will never forget and I don't consider it a waste of my time. However, when my desires began to shift, I had to get a degree from a secular college.
Nothing wrong with either scenario, imo.

Not an exact quote (still waiting on that) but what I heard was said was in the vein that a person didn't necessarily need an college education to work for the Lord. PP if you have time I would like to hear the exact quote.
I was taken back a bit at the amount of pastoring that was done in the last sermon, concerning dress, music etc. Although I think it was more of a promotion of modesty as opposed to "UPCI Dress Code Doctrine".
And even though we heard a very strong push to stay away from such things there was a great deal of bantar towards Cubs fans. It was obvious by the high-fiving on the platform that "wordly amusement" wasn't an issue.

What state do you live in?
A typical program part time will require about 3 years, then you have to get some experience through an internship (about 3000 hours) then you can apply for a licensure or certification through your state agency that provides oversight.
The great thing about this work is you can set your own hours, you get paid well somewhere between $60-$90 per hour and it gives you a lot of time and skills for ministry.

I think this may be a viable option for me, Keith ... I'm considering getting a second Master's .... this might be what I've been praying for ....
On another topic, would you post a thread w/ some info and resources on home churches ... I've done some research ... and have read Simson and Barna [Revolution] ... I'm hoping to start one ... in the next 2 months.

What is your first MA in?
No, but I have read enough summaries and conclusions to know his contents.
I agree the mega church phenomenon will be a thing of the past within 20 years, must of our generation will quickly bore and grow weary with the traditional structure of church as we know it. Persecution and hardship will cause many who are dependent upon that structure for their nourishment/growth/connection to God to fall away.
In the last year I have been on a journey couldn't really put a finger on why I felt the way that I did, I came across Wolf's book and some speaking CDs by him, I then understood why I felt the way that I did.
I am not one to not appreciate my history and what has been handed to me, but the current model that I was handed in school basically makes believers good church members but doesn't make them good disciples.
It takes a honest and true soul to come to that conclusion and the radicalness to sacrifice everything and re examine all our experiences through the lenses of a NT world view, it was a work of the Holy Spirit. And he is not done.
I have read almost everything out there, Neil Cole's Works, Ralph Neighbor, Cominskey, Cho, Simson, House to House stuff, Larry Krieder, looked at the G 12 stuff, etc. There isn't to much that I haven't read.
Reading Christian Schwarzt stuff now, along with Jack Deere re-reading his two books, also perusing some Systematic Theology, also preparing some SS lessons on renewing the mind. Busy, Busy.

I have a BA in American History ... minor in Education
My Masters is in Special Education ...
I too have been on a similar journey as it pertains to home churches ... but not as well versed as you ...
I can attest that the current model is far removed from the Acts apostolic model ...
I have the House 2 House manual also.
Are you part of a network? ... I am interested in joining or starting a network also.

Special Education? Man you could make a killing in CA, they are so desperate from Special Ed people, I think you could negotiate whatever you want!
I am trying to the best of both worlds, I have a building centered service on Sunday's and a small group during the week, the congregation we have now still are in the old wineskins mindset, very difficult to get them to see or do anything else.
If people only understood the reason why so little people are involved in churches, is because the structure and how to are designed to prevent people from being involved.

I saw that you had close to 60 on Sunday... are you planning for 2 to 3 house churches ?
Have you seen the Xenos Christian fellowship group .... they have a great network ... with their own buildings for training, their own academic schools, and resourceful website while still using the house church model.

Bro. Alicea,
Bro. Keith is right...there are many open doors for special education and very few doors for counseling. I have counseled in several churches and I know that you can charge clients what you want but you rarely get paid, or only get minimal %.
Right now in this area they are paying between $40-75.00 for a 50 minute counseling session. I made much more money as a Bachelor's level Social Worker.
Blessings, Rhoni
