I didn't hear that. I hope they hammer that news. LOL!
This is very McCain to suspend things to come back and take care of business. And the reality is, again - McCain worked on S190 a few years ago to address this very issue - soooo - I'm thinking he would want to be in Washington.
He started the ball rolling a long time ago. They need to push that issue. It's probably why the Democrats are scrambling for something - anything to put a negative light on McCain.

Reid changes his tune on McCain involvement - and for good reason; Update: Video added
As Allahpundit already noted in an update to his excellent post on John McCain’s suspension of his campaign, Harry Reid went out of his way to tell him, “don’t bother”. However, as John McCormack notes at the Weekly Standard, that’s just a day after Reid’s insistence that McCain return to support the Bush administration’s bailout plan. How soon they forget:

Spin masters!
What gets me, is that they still play politics even when so much is hanging in the balance.

I hadn't seen that article by the National Review. That's an amazingly critical description of Sarah Palin's efforts so far by a strong conservative magazine.
I think you're right that Romney would have been a much bigger help to McCain given the economic events. Romney has a distinguishing record in economics both as Governor and in leading the Salt Lake Olympics. He would have brought instant economic credability to the McCain ticket that Obama couldn't have competed with.
This might be a completely different election had he chosen Romney.

Kathleen Parker has been against Palin from day one. Nothing surprising here.
