You don't have to twist the scripture to preach against drunkeness. That is clear as the fact that there was alcohol in use amongst Isreal and it was condoned and blessed by their God.

There are a lot of "typical" responses on this thread.

Is being "impaired" by alcohol a sin?

Should we make light of such things? I'm not offended by intelligent conversation. I'm offended when sin is made to be a laughing matter, or into something trivial...perhaps treated as if it is essentially harmless, when it never is. I'm offended when those who hold certain convictions for both Biblical and personal reasons are ridiculed.
Normally I can discuss this topic quite rationally. Today isn't my day, apparently.

I'm still waiting to see the post where someone was laughing about the good old days and celebrating being drunk.......
I fully understand how people can be sensitive about this (considering something like 1/3 to 1/2 of all kids grew up with a jerk of an alcoholic father or mother) and for that reason I specifically DON'T "celebrate" it -and don't understand myself how some college kids ENJOY it (something I alluded to in another post which has been conveniently ignored).
BUT..... when Jesus HIMSELF actually CREATED wine, to put ANY post mearly talking about it into the same arena as "celebrating sin", I have a problem with that.

Sin is a pleasure......and somethings are funny to remember.
Sometimes it's makes me laugh to remember what I did.

This entire thread started out of context slightly from both camps.
Yes some mature Christians said some things that were of questionable judgment in their attempts at humor. However blasphemy seems a bit harsh pronouncement.
Both sides have now thrown down into a measuring contest.
Facts pretty much agreed. Drunk is wrong. Drunk is sin. Drinking in moderation not banned by Bible. Drinking to get a buzz, or mind altering, would definitely fall under questionable behavior at best criminal if behind car.
There are health benefits to moderate drinking (glass of wine a day) which is proven by fact that moderate drinkers live longer and healthier than teetotalers.
However, too often moderate drinking DOES lead to abusive drinking, and makes some more susceptible to other drugs and alcoholism.
So while not a gateway to hell per se, it should be done with caution, if at all. And it is in poor taste to treat the topic lightly or with jocularity.
As far as Biblical standards, this would be like the eating meat sacrificed to idols. Follow your conscience, but go out of your way not to be a stumblingblock to your brother.
So in essence both sides are right to degree, and both sides share blame for this thread getting out of control.

I suppose it has to be determined what it means to be "intoxicated." Scripture says to "be not drunk with wine", and drunk means "intoxicated", so...does intoxicated mean tipsy? Or does it mean "I can't stand up?"
According to Strong's, the word "drunk" in Eph. 5:18 is the transitive form of the word "drunkard", the latter meaning "tipsy." (Or intoxicated)
When is one tipsy? When is one intoxicated? What qualifies as "drunk?"

You'll probably be slammed by PP and requested a permanent banishment for your blaspheme.
And I still reject the premise that I said or did anything wrong..... Before PP went all mid evil on me.

Yes Randy, Jesus created wine, but was it w/alcohol? I really wish people would convince me that it was. Would it be just as extra biblical to say that the wine Jesus made was w/alcohol as it would be to say that just a small cup of alcohol to drink was going to send one to hell?
