Would that be grace or mercy?

Grace was the fact that God would even consider him, and Mercy was the end result of that consideration, his being saved from the destruction of the world.

So how would you explain the difference between Mercy and Grace?

Mercy is a result of Grace being bestowed.

Mercy as used in the bible is a decorator for a place whereas Grace is a thing. "the throne of mercy", "the mercy seat", etc... "By grace are you saved ..." In the "place" of mercy one obtains grace("Favour without merit"). Mercy is Christ dying in for sins, Grace is Him extending that to "whosoever will". Mercy is the sacrificial substitution, Grace is the spiritual resurrection(ie arise in the newness of life)

I always have heard that Grace is giving us what we do not deserve. Mercy is NOT giving us what we DO deserve.
