Take the medicine and don't stop taking it unless the doctor tells you to.

Some things seem to help keep blood pressure lower
like cutting back on salt,
cutting out caffeine (in coffee and soft drinks),
exercise,
losing weight.
Actually, these are all things to do even if it doesn't help your blood pressure.

Medication helps. There are lots of blood pressure medications and many (maybe all) have adverse effects such as impotence, dizziness, staggering, cold hands and feet, to name a few. Not all medications affect everyone the same way so you may need to work with your doctor with different ones for a while to find one that does not have any of these adverse effects, or that has minimal effects, or effects that you can learn to live with.

As a husband and father you have certain responsibilities to your wife and children. Among these responsibilities are: being there for them as long as you can, and being healthy for them.

I suggest you adopt healthy habits that are better whether they help the blood pressure or not, and work with your doctor to come up with a medication that maintains a good blood pressure with a minimum of adverse side effects.

Just some advice from an old man, a Dad and a Grandpa that had quadruple bypass surgery 12 years ago, and is only here with his kids and grandkids because of God's mercy and grace.

There are natural things you can do along also such as watermelon, cucumbers and things like that...look on the net for ideas but I would also take the medicine and work with natural products. Brother Alvear has very high blood pressure and I worry about him and make sure he takes his pill the first thing every morning.
The work needs him and we need him!
AMEN! If we would eat less, and eat right, and take care of our temples with some moderate exercise instead of preaching against everything but eating and going to church we might be better stewards of our time, money, and other natural resources!

Las November I was driving along in the car and I felt I heard God's still small voice saying, "so you're going to give up without a fight?"

I felt at that time God was seeming to say that I didn't have to live with High Blood Pressure.

Now my doctor is trying to put me on high blood pressure medication, but when I go on them they are not so easy to stop.

What say you?

On the one hand I don't want to have my kids be fatherless, but at the same time, I don't want to get entangled with High Blood Pressure Medication that in itself is expensive and awkward but also may find it hard to get off of, I also don't want to be a Heart Attack/Stroke statistic either.

He ordered some blood work and some other tests in the meantime.

Any advice-I am open and listening.

I will be out for most of the day but will check back later.

Thanks.
What's missing here....does anyone know of a cause for the high BP? Maybe a change in diet and exercise would help. And perhaps less AFF?

I take Cardizem every night for Blood Pressure control. I had trouble with my heart a few years ago, and they put me on beta blockers. They made me feel so washed out I could hardly get up in the mornings. So they put me on Cardizem and I feel great!

Now, if I would lose about 25 pounds, I might could get off of it!!

Switch from regular salt to Morton Lite Salt.

Eat a healthy diet. Cut back on red meats. Eat more chicken or fish. Cut back on fried foods. Eat more veggies.

Drink more water.

Get more exercise.

Take odorless garlic capsules every day.

Take Omega 3 capsules.

This will help lower the blood pressure naturally without medication.

My husband does this under the care of a nurse practioner. He hasn't had a spike in his blood pressure since the last scare he had. And he feels great.

Blood pressure isn't something you want to play around with. It's a silent killer.

Medication isn't always necessary if drastic changes are made to your diet/exercise routine.... but it's also very wise to have a doctor that supports your ideas for life changes, and will monitor your health while you work harder to be healthy.

I agree with this approach, I believe most high blood pressure is the result of eating habits and lifestyle. But in most cases it can be controlled by diet and reasonable exercise. Overeating and eating the wrong foods are not that difficult to correct. I am fortunate that my wife learned healthy food preparation early, therefore I am not troubled with HBP. Walking two miles three to four times a week really helps. There is a book called "The ABS Diet" the is great for eating healthy, even when you are eating out. When you are over fifty you just simply don't need near as much food.

after i fast for 3 days my blood pressure goes down, fast for 10 days and it stays down for a while w/me.. water fast...

another thing that works for me is if you have a juicer
1 or 2 cloves of fresh garlic
2 sprigs of parsley
enough pears to fill the glass up with pear juice(canned are fine)
do it for 2 or 3 months daily and watch what happens
and mosquitoes wont bite you so no west nile virus worries

all those priests chasing little boys drove mine up....

Make sure you don't already have a problem with potassium like too much or not enough since salt substitutes use potassium chloride instead of sodium chloride....or better yet just don't use salt or use less. Salt substitutes taste aweful to me
