It seems to me that there has been a definite shift in the whole attitude about masculinity both in and out of the church. In my opinion, it is NOT a good trend.
I can remember old preachers who would say that, “If your teenage boy seems to be a little soft, encourage him to get a pair of cowboy boots.” Maybe it’s the effect of the feminist movement, but I think effeminate traits are tolerated more, and perhaps even encouraged today, whether in or out of the church. When I was a kid, it was shameful to be called, or even looked on as a “sissy ”. I mean, you had no choice but to fight to defend your honor. To do less would be to concede that it might be remotely true. Nobody wanted to be saddled with that.
I remember a story my father told me about his mother, who died when I was about eight years old. My father was raised in the Great Depression and he told me that he didn’t remember doing without. His mother raised chickens and had eggs to eat as well as the chickens, and she raised a garden. My father thought that this was the reason that they never seemed poor, even though times were obviously hard.
And he said that his mother had better never hear a hen crow. (I didn’t know hens were capable of crowing, but evidently it can happen). He said if she heard a hen crow one time, it was chicken and dumplings for supper. She didn’t want a confused chicken on the place! Imagine if one of her sons or grandsons seemed a little “precious”!
And from a scriptural perspective, the Bible is clear that God doesn’t like effeminate men (even typing it seems oxymoronic). An example . . .
1 Corinthians 6
[9] Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor
effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
[10] Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
Bear in mind that this tells us in plain language that the effeminate won’t inherit the kingdom of God.
And in the OT . . .
Deut.23
[1] He that is wounded in the stones, or hath his privy member cut off, shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD.
It seems pretty graphic and perhaps even harsh in the case of possibly an accident that may have been beyond their control, but it is significant no doubt!
So I agree with this brother. Let the men be men. Teach the boys to be men. It’s important. It is a heaven or hell issue.
