Mark 16:16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.
Jesus said salvation consisted of believing and baptism. You must be baptized by complete submersion in water in the name of Jesus.

Blackxeas, that's one scripture that's hard to refute for those who don't believe in the necessity of baptism. One thing I don't understand is those pastors who continually point to the fact that "baptism isn't essential." I mean, seriously, you are that confident in your beliefs that you're willing to tell people to ignore a Biblical commandment on the basis that your understanding is correct?
The thought of this makes me cringe at the idea of being a pastor. I guess I need to somehow find out exactly what I believe, but it's so hard because people use the Bible to prooftext their beliefs instead of taking it in context.
That was a rant. Excuse me.

Re: Do you have to get wet to be saved?
Considering that Jesus' earthly ministry did not begin until he was baptized, it seems that baptism must play a very important role in salvation. Once Jesus was baptized, he was taken into the wilderness for 40 days, and tempted of Satan after. Then, we have the plethora of scriptures showing that all the apostles baptized new believers immediately upon conversion.
So yes... with all scriptures taken into consideration, and the fact that Jesus himself was baptized before his earthly ministry began, it would seem critical that baptism in the name of the Lord Jesus take place.

Re: Do you have to get wet to be saved?
Good points! The " baptism is only an outward sign of an inner work" argument against the necessity of it makes no sense. If there is an inner work then the outward sign would follow. If we are baptized because we are already saved then what is the point of it?

Jesus said you didn't have to be baptized to be saved.
Joh 11:26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
Joh 11:27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.

You have to look at the totality of the Bible, not just part of it.
Jesus did say you have to be baptized to be saved.
"He that believed and is baptized shall be saved."

Did Martha believe Him? Apparently so.
No baptism here.

OK you can pick and choose what you want to believe, it is your eternal destiny, not mine.

More than likely she had already been baptized. While we have no record of who the disciples baptized, it would seem, according to the tradition of the Jews, that when they followed a leader, they were baptized into his name.
So, Jesus was speaking to her, knowing that she had already been baptized, and now he was speaking to her of her faith, which is the essential foundation of the gospel message.
