The gist is why we need gifts and healing today and if we don't contend for it and stir these manifestations up, we are in deep spiritual trouble.
1. In the beginning all Christians believed in praying for healing. Everyone got to play.
2. Then just a few prayed for healing. And healing itself became rare.
3. Next they told stories about how it used to happen when Jesus and the Apostles prayed.
4. Then they wondered if the healing stories in the Gospel weren’t just a wonderful fairy tale invented to make a point.
5. Lastly, they came to a point where they didn’t even believe in the fairy tale any longer. It never really happened in the first place! And that’s where some Christians are today!

I have always believed that, but I never heard it put quite that way! Very interesting

Apostolic is defined on AFF as:
- There is One God. This one God reveals Himself distinctly as Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
- The Son is God himself in a human form or "God manifested in the flesh" (1Tim 3:16)
- Every sinner must repent of their sins.
- That Jesus name baptism is the only biblical mode of water baptism.
- That the Holy Ghost is for today and is received by faith with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues.
- The saint will go on to strive to live a holy life, pleasing to God.

God did it for us. Out of sheer generosity he put us in right standing with himself. A pure gift. He got us out of the mess we're in and restored us to where he always wanted us to be. And he did it by means of Jesus Christ. ~Romans 3:24 from The Message

Before the service the Lord spoke to my pastor to mention the need to be planted in a church and he spoke on that after the preaching.
He was not aware of it, but there were visitors that were going to different churches and were not planted.
Prior to that I had been praying and fasting and the prayer on my heart was for the Lord to stir up the gifts in us.
Praise God....I don't know about you but I don't care about some eloquent speaker..I don't care about some speaker that can make lots of funnys...I don't care about all that if the gifts are not active. I've heard every message under the sun. And I have heard some great ones, but Paul said
1Th 1:5 For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit, and in much assurance, as you know what kind of men we were among you for your sake.
Sometimes I feel like we are too much like the greeks of Paul's day who seek knowledge. Knowledge is good, but the true church has the demonstration of the Power of the Spirit of God!

Paul presented a living Gospel. A living Christ. On Mars Hills, he boldly proclaimed: "For in him we live, and move, and have our being..." Act 17:28 He relied, not on his own wisdom, on his own knowledge, but on the Gospel that was accompanied by the "power and demonstration of the Spirit". The Gospel lay at the center of His preaching, and the movement of the Holy Spirit was the force that brought life and vibrancy to his message. It wasn't about Paul or other personalities... it was about Jesus.
As I read through this thread, I thought of the late 50's whenthe Healing Revival was in full swing. Some of the evangelists became master self-promoters and became boastful in their accomplishments. Reports of healing and crowd were exergerated and it seesmed denominational leaders had to take steps to "reign in" some of these evangelists, many of which left their organizations and became independent. This heightened the problem somewhat- these "renegade" evangelists now had no orgainzational oversight or accountabilty. They then could, and often did, say or do, whatever they wanted. As a result, the "Healing Movemnet" spun out of crontrol and crashed. The efforts to bring control to the Movement led to its demise.
Certainly, any movement of God must "stay the course" but we should welcome and encourage the Holy Spirit to work among us. And, as long we we keep Jesus as the focal point of our work and ministry, we'll see Him move among us. The gifts will permeate our services...people will be drawn to the truth. As John, we must decrease...it is Jesus that must increase.

Triple AMEN that!!!
Problem is, the church is too busy criticizing and judging to allow GOD TO WORK (as is revealed over and over in this forum).
If we could bind up the Spirit of Condemnation, separating TRUTH from opinion, and let go the JUNK... then the Power of God will fall.
I will give you my "pew"point (defined as viewpoint from the pew)... there are MANY people sitting in UPC churches today silenced in their giftings because they feel they are viewed "unworthy" because they do not adhere to standards... Silenced in their ministries because they will not bow to man.
So many of the Body's hands and feet are bound! Bound by religion.
In the Name of Jesus, free us from bondage! Save us from ourselves!

"Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask
or think, ACCORDING TO THE POWER (HOLY GHOST) THAT WORKETH IN US."
(Eph.3:20)
No prayer, no power.
Little prayer, little power
MUCH PRAYER, MUCH POWER!
"But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in
the Holy Ghost," Jude 1:20
