Don't be so sure the defection rate would be that large but if so then why do we need guns? We can just let the military fight it out and or arm is when the time comes
Armed citizens (even without machine guns like in Switzerland) would certainly account for a huge deterrent should the Government decide to institute martial law and disarm citizens.

From our history, I'm told that the Revolution was fought by 3% of our population at the time. And they fought with muskets, shovels & pitchforks, whatever they had.
If they could find a way back then, I think it could be done again. That is the American way.
