We are born without eyesight
we are born without sin
and our mama protects us
from the cold and the rain
we're in no hurry
sugar and spice
we sing in the darkness
and then weo penou reyes
(open up)

yup, it's all about the lyrics, imo.

Re: Is it wrong to listen to secular music?

2Cor 10:3For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: 4(For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; ) 5Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ

Most of the battle is in our minds.

I listen to only Christian music, but even then those that take my mind out of a spirit of prayer I leave alone. A lot of black gospel now is turning into 80's Earth Wind and Fire and is getting auto tuned. A lot of contemporary Christian music is going Seattle grunge. I am not comfortable with those things (though Todd Agnew is kinda grungy he's ok).

I'm ok with classical and a lot of 'new age' (why do they call Celtic new age?) instrumental. The point is, what's exalted? If it is fleshly, carnal - ditch it. If you are at peace with yourself and God, keep it.

Re: Is it wrong to listen to secular music?

I'm a musician and I love to listen to good music. Usually the music I listen to has no words(mostly instrumental jazz). It is just good music. I do enjoy Christian music. I like good praise and worship music. To me getting to listen to jazz is like getting to eat a steak. I guess if I did too much of either one it wouldn't be good. But it's so much more enjoyable to me than songs with 3 chords or uninteresting melodies or drab rhythms.

Re: Is it wrong to listen to secular music?

Some of the Psalms were written to tunes of secular songs. Someone in David's inner circle had to listen to secular music, somewhere.

Amazing Grace started as a poem. The tune came from a well know secular song in New Britain.

Use Philippians 4:8 as a template. A christian shouldn't listen to a song if it violates the biblical principles. Each song should stand on it's merit.

Re: Is it wrong to listen to secular music?

I rarely listen to christian radio. The music I have on my Blackberry mostly consists of Jesus Culture, Misty Edwards, Christ for the Nations, Eddie James, Hillsong, Hillsong United, Judah Nation Band, Rick Pino. I throw in some Van Halen and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

I'll listen to the public broadcasting station. Classic rock. My kids and I listen to Top 40 music in the car. We discuss the lyrics in context with a Biblical view.

Re: Is it wrong to listen to secular music?

Your taste in music changes when you are saved.

There are three kinds of music:

1. Of satan, by satan, for satan.
2. Of God, by God, for God.
3. Of man, by man, for man.

All music goes directly to your spirit, good and bad.

Evaluate this:

The Music.
The people playing it.
The message in the songs.
The total presentation, such as clothing, etc.

Remember: You are what you listen to.
