MTD: The more one reads and studies the NT, (as I have been doing recently) they will see that your point of view on this subject was indeed the POV of the apostles.
The apostles recognized there was more beyond just the cross, the blood, the water, and the spirit or initial birthing experience into the kingdom of Christ.
Paul taught over and over, time after time.... that because of the new life living in us, and the power given to us, that we were to walk soberly, prayerfully, and constantly inspecting our heart and lives to see if we are pleasing to God.
There is a certain "measuring stick" of the Spirit of God within us, and if we tune out the voice of the Spirit asking us to deny the lusts of the flesh, to turn away from wilful sin, and to die to our flesh daily, then you find that Paul speaks of severe consequences.
Like Paul said several times.... after they have been corrected, and admonished with brotherly love and concern, and still wilfully sinning, and continuing on in their unrepentant ways....
1 Cor. 5:5 "To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus."
1 Tim. 1:19-20 "Holding faith and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck: of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme."
Sounds pretty harsh to me, yet, it seems that in the case of the Corinthian man who was committing incest, that by this church discipline being put in place with brotherly love and concern, that this man found a place of repentance and was able to overcome.
II Cor. 2:4-11
We cannot play around with sin in our lives, as MTD has said. We must constantly be listening for the voice of the Spirit in our hearts, convicting us of our sinful deeds and ways, and allowing the divine nature and power of Jesus Christ to so change us that we begin to rise above our sinful nature, as we walk with him, daily denying our flesh.
Ephesians 4:22-24 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; and be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
