Maybe people should just try jumping in and helping.. When it comes to dinners and such, those running it sometimes get tired of asking because they hear the same excuses...over and over... If you jump in and say, hey, I'll make this and I clean up that, more than likely someone is going to say thank you and appreciate that.

Now when it comes to talent such as singing or playing instruments....one needs to let the pastor or whoever know that they ARE available with as few exceptions as possible...... if then you aren't used, which I have seen before many a time, ............just keep on living for God and don't get discouraged...But no one can stop any one from worshipping except oneself.

But wasn't that because he first asked "if it is you lord, bid me to come?" he made that first step...

And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me "Come" unto to thee on the water.

And he said, "Come"...Then Peter walked on the water.

The thing I note is that Peter did not have faith to walk on the water without being asked to "Come".

Peter knew who he was... He was looking for the confidence in his Lord that he was capable of doing the impossible...

Then he saw first hand, that once he fell the Lord was waiting to pick him up.

Someone needs to reach out to those on the pew, not by hiding behind the pulpit and asking.

Place the phone call, take the church member out for lunch.

Bid them to come and if you have built a relationship of trust and respect.

They will step out of the pew and get to work.

Otherwise they will stay behind the out spoken members such as Peter was and we will never know.

Maybe the remaining 11 might have walked on the water and not have fallen...

The actual first step was Jesus walking on the water out to meet the 12 in the boat.

I see what you are saying.......but it's gotta go both ways....People have to let the ministry know that they are "willing" and "able" and the ministry needs to act on it....I, like many of you , have been in , or close to , the ministry for a while and it takes 2......I"ve seen churches where many are crying they want to be used while the preacher is crying no one wants to help....communication!!!!!!!

Bro. In all sincerity, most pastors I know continually make appeals for folks to get involved. That goes beyond the prayer request of Jesus.

WHile I understand many of your points I have a hard time with folks who "just have to have" a personal invitation to get involved.

My earlier post stated that someone/anyone should ask those folks to get involved. With my business experience we all know that 20% of the people do 80% of the work.

But there are some gems sitting in churches today that folks have not taken the time to even ask what they do for a living.

We all know some folks will never get involved.

I do not put the burden on the pastor.

I put it on the atmoshere of the church.

I can totally agree with that.

One of the issues with these types of discussions is that we all repsond from our particular perspective. There are pastors who never invite folks to invilvement and churches stagnate; then there are pastors who continually plead with folks all to no avail. Frustration rules the day in both cases. There must be a balance of unnecessary invitation being given and necessary response being offered.

All to often, being involved means following a whole nother set of rules in order to be involved.

That is true when it comes to being part of the "platform crew" or teaching in Sunday school and stuff like that....

But I don't think anyone cares what kind of rules you abide by if you are just mopping the bathroom floors!
